Jeep Trailer

Hi everyone
Does anyone know someone with a Jeep Trailer that we could use or rent to go to  Moab at the end of March??

Silly question.... Have you tried U-haul, or someplace similar?
Or buy fug's.... if he still has it.

depending on your rig just set it up to flat tow it.  Flat tow bar is like $100 and if you have the 231 case the rear drive shaft drives the t-case oil pump so all you have to do is put the t-case in neutral.  If you have a different case just dissconnect the drive shafts & reconnect them when you get there.  Just an idea.

i heard you should never back up with them?
Maybe that was the problem?

might of been. cant realy back around a corner as the front wheels of the towed vehicle go where they want. my problem was a steep driveway, an fc that sits high, a grandcherokee that doesnt sit high, and a stock bumper on the fc that realy started twisting

Pretty much the same issue when I moved the Willy without its engine.....they're not really made for backing up unless you have someone in the rear vehicle steering (even then, without power steering, an old CJ, and 34" tires sure does not help).

I flat tow behind my motorhome lots...backing up is not an option!
Exceptions:
You can back up less than a foot
You can back up if someone decent is steering and the power steering works
You can back up on gravel if you don't mind shoving the vehicle acrros the gravel
that is my experience at least

We've been thru the tow bar thing before on here. A search will bring up the past threads but I'll give the main points.

Tow bars put ZERO hitch weight on the tow vehicle so the tow vehicle must be much bigger than the vehicle being towed to keep the back end planted and not be pushed around. Alberta law is like twice the weight, so for most Jeeps on a tow bar you would need a truck with a camper on it for a minimum. This is why motorhomes work well.

Also any trailer over 3500# must have brakes on it. You Grand Cherokee my be rated to pull 5000# but the manufactor assumes that any load over 3500# has its own brakes. The brakes on a Grand Cherokee are not big enough to stop itself plus another 5000#.

People do it all the time but its not a good idea, get a tow dolly with brakes or a trailer if you don't have a 10,000#+ tow vehicle.

Oh yeah backing up usually only works if you lock the steering wheel and back straight up. Its also REALLY hard on the tow bar.

i bought fugs trailer. the tow bar was an interm thing and was only used moving junk around the yard

Sorry, wasn't citing you out specifically, just using Grand Cherokees as an example. This comes up a lot on the Grand Cherokee forums I frequent. Seems that since people have a V8 in their Jeep they think they can pull anything. Flat towing is vastly different than towing a regular trailer and people often just look at the weights and not the dynamics of it.

I once jack knifed my 3/4 Dodge Diesel 4X4(empty box) in the rain when towing a CJ on 35s. I got an education that day!
