SBC Tuned Port Injection
« on: February 09, 2010, 01:13:30 PM »
Is there anyone in the CJA who has experience installing/converting a SBC to tuned port injection (TPI)?

Here are the choices for my SBC powered YJ:

1st choice... buy a brand new "Affordable Fuel Injection" TPI setup. Problem is everytime I call there are none available to ship. If I put down $1000 the guy says they ship in 8 weeks... which probably means 16 weeks plus. This is a complete brand new kit w/ distributor, fuel pump, harness, manifold, computer, program , etc.

2nd choice... I already have a "mass flow" TPI manifold off of a running SBC and can buy a brand new "speed density" 3 wire hookup harness w/ computer & program for $500. This will involve purchasing some sensors, etc and taking a run at getting it to all work together. I am really leery of this option as I think it could turn into a nightmare pretty quick.

Anyway... have any experience with this?

what year is the small block, do you mind changing the heads?, If you found a vortec donor you could use the vortec heads on your short block and all the oem fuel injection/wiring/pcm components.  The only prob with these heads is that if your cam has a large amount of lift the rocker studs bosses would have to be machined down.  When all is said and done you could have davenport do a custom tune on their dyno.  If I had to guess the whole thing would prob cost 1000-1500 depending on the cost of the donor parts.  Just an idea. Plus all your parts would be local and cheap if anything ever failed.

It's a 1970 w/ old style heads. Would like to stick w/ engine "as is" but swap on TPI to replace the TBI.

This is one of those "its easy when ya know how" kinda things. If I take on option#2... it would be nice to have a "consultant" I could call when the thing wont start and I'm ready to pour a can of gas on it  ;)

I still think that the vortec heads will fit it.  I know people that have this setup on 1970's 400 small blocks and it works great.  Either way I have done similar conversion work in the past for customers so if you have anything I might be able to help with send me a pm.

Nothing really wrong with the TBI.

The main driver for this project is the wiring in the YJ leaves a little to be desired... so I got a sweet custom switch panel from "12voltguy" that will run the whole Jeep and a universal "Painless" wiring harness and re-wire the whole Jeep.

Now... if I'm going to re-wire the whole thing... I would like to clean up my fuel injection harness as well... and... I have always like TPI over TBI... so here I am.

If I could actually get my hands on a brand new "AFI" TPI system... I would be wiring up my Jeep right now instead of writing this post  ;)

if you plan on rewireing a vehicle, i advise getting a kit. yes you can buy all the pieces, but its nice to have labeled wires already bunched together. i have rewired several vehicles from scratch and can see the virtues of a kit. i have a 58 willies that is only partly wired because of this, that and its hard to solder with hyperthermia

Fear of the unknown wins  :-[ I'm gonna order a AFI TPI system today and take my chances. Maybe the guy is telling the truth and it will be in... in 6-8 weeks.

Pretty  sweet setup...

Holy crap... my TPI system for my YJ shipped... and right bang in between the 6-8 weeks they told me. I should learn to be more trusting  ::)

Its not all rainbows and lollypops though... they sent it Via UPS instead of USPS... so theres another $300 gone. Man do I hate UPS  >:(

If I get it running I'll post some pics and brag... if not I'll hide and feel the shame  :-[
