Crappy Tire Sales

I have been to a few of the stores and notice some really great deals on tools. Each store has different deals on, I picked up some of the closed ratchet wrenches for $9 regularly $45 (Signal Hill) as well as 50 peice screw bits for $7 (Shawnessy), 20 piece screw driver set for $8 (Signal Hill). I scored on a $1.50 for 25 peice bits with plastic roll in case at Mckenzie Towne. Volt/Ohm meter for $8 reg. $40 with case (Store Location?)
All are the blue Maximum brand. I learned my lesson on Job Mate and Princess Auto brand Power Fist.

1 question about a brand. Stanley. Bought a socket set from the new Wal-Mart supercenter. Are they any good?

I've used Stanley tools for a long time in concrete/construction industry... You couldn't pry my fat max from my cold dead hand haha.

I have bought 3 Stanley socket sets from Walmart for carrrying around in the truck/Jeep. Havn't broken one so far but I don't beat on them like I do my garage tools(mostly Craftsman, some Husky).

stanley uses the same manufacture as canadian tire does
i have no have any issues with my stanley set

I have heard through a known bullshitter that all the mastercraft maximum tools are just re-badged snap on tool.  I can not say for sure, but I do know my Mastercraft maximum wrenches looks almost identical when compared to a Snap on wrench.

Either way, can tire is the place to get tools IMHO.  If you can wait, they always seem to come on sale at at least 50% off.  Check the flyers online...I do, and I have spent too much on tools there now haha.

yeah man i picked up a ~250 piece mastercraft mechanics socket set for a great deal. same with sears. I have a stanley hammer. thats all, but it pounds nails very well

I totally agree that power fist hand tools, wrenches and sockets etc are junk...but you shouldn't write off all their stuff. I've been reall happy with most of their specialty tools like pullers, ball joint press, wire strippers, seal pullers,  etc. There cheap air tools are crap but some of their "pro" stuff's done ok for me.
The nice thing about PA is besides the annoyance factor, there's no risk...they will let you return any thing for any reason at any time.

Job mate on the other hand is just junk IMO. Mastercraft Maximum on sale are IMO the best bang for the buck.

Agreed, except for the rachets if you use them a lot. Max series rachets are just as crappy as the regular series.

Signet have been working for me for rachets, but I blew one of those as well, but it lasted nearly 2 years. Compared to the month I usually get out of a maximum, I'd say its pretty good.

You can get signet stuff at Quest, and maybe greggs.

i got a 250 piec e set for $80 for the back of the jeep...hasnt let me down. However i am pretty partial to some of the Husky stuff i have, looks very similar to the Mac tools i have..and works flawlessly...and Home depot carries them..

I've been pretty impressed with Husky as well. They had a promotion years ago where you could bring in broken Snap-on, Mac or Craftsman tools and they would give you a free equivalent Husky tool. Itraded in a broken 3/8s ratchet and u-joint and they are still going strong 5 years later. The Craftsman u-joints I used to only get one or two uses out of it before breaking it.

Work buys mostly thru Acklands and Gregg's and so I have a LOT of Westward and Proto tools. My 3/8 Proto ratchet was in my tool box before I got it 10 years ago and I use almost every day. Its lasted 10+ years.

FWIW, i break mastercraft every other month..................  might go in today and trade broken ratchets for new ones.

i've also been using PA tools for a while now........... and they've held up;  how/why, i have no clue. breaker bars, you name it.  i did break a ratchet once, but hey, unit bearings can be a beotch
