Anyone change their timing chain yet?
« on: March 02, 2010, 07:28:27 PM »
How many km's does anybody recomment changing the timing chain on the 4.0?
I have 297322 km and I have a rattle coming from up front so I think its time,
Does the 97 4.0l have the replaceable plastic tensioner I was reading about?

Thanks

i have done mine on my 99 at 375k, and didnt have any problems...mind you i also had the whole front end off the jeep, and the head removed...mine had a plastic timing chain guide..if that is what you were referring too..You sure it is the timing chain? there are jeeps with 400k+ without timing chain issues...is it running rough, misfiring fairly noticeably?

It sounds like the timing chain, My tj had piston slap (in my opinion) and I have heard lifter ticking on my old beaters.

I know that not all vehicles have the same engine life but if there are some timing chains with 400k on them maybe I will just wait until I have a misfire or rough idle before I look into it....

Thanks

unless it is misfiring and you ae getting a p300 code, dont bother...p300 "multiple misfire" is a goosechase..burnt exhaust valve, cps, tps, o2 sensor 1, or plugs/cap/rotor...if its just valve slap, then pull the head and lap the valves, change to mopar performance springs ,are suppossed to be 120# at 1.640. They have a 270# spring rate.
