TJ rack and bumper... maybe?
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:38:53 PM »
I will be heading west this summer and need some more storage space in the TJ.  I am looking at those racks that sit above the spare tire.  Some of them look pretty flimsy!  And secondly, I really don't want to drill through the sheet metel - I will if it's the only option.  I will also need some sort of a hitch on the back in case I decide to tow something later on.  So I was also looking at those bumpers with the receiver built in - but boy those aftermarket bumpers are expensive!

Basically, I am looking for some ideas for storage and a hitch of some sort.  Maybe a new spare tire carrier - then I could load it up!  If you have any ideas or insight, I would love to hear them (or see them).  Thanks.

Can build you anything you want. Heres a couple pics of one I built for my buddys jeep. I'm a red seal welder so basically you dream it up and I'll make it happen. Just moved to Calgary so won't have my shop set up till May.

I just received the same bumper, It's pretty good for the price, $280 and only $15 for shipping. Also has a receiver. So far so good. Srevice from trail gear is top notch. took about 14 days to get.

Hey Kyle I think you may have just helped North Shore sell a few of these bumpers. I have to admit I am looking at it too. You cant beat the price.

It's kinda weird, these bumpers seem to be made with a one inch body lift in mind...if you do not have one you will need to trim the rear flares a little, like on offroadnewbie's jeep.

Will this bumper hold a 35x13.5 tire?

with a 35/12.5 there is about 2 inches cleearance behind the tire so I think it would.

Could I just attach a wheel spacer so it fits?

yes but i think it would fit. it's aslo your backspacing to consider . you don't need a wheel spacer for a spare you could just use some nuts if it need to go out a little .

Holy snappers, batman. You TJ guys have it a lot easier on aftermarket parts than JK drivers.

The price of that whole package (front bumper, rear bumper, tire carrier, and sliders) is about on par for a front bumper for a JK....if you get a great deal.

The rear bumpers with tire carriers start at twice that price  :o
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(
