help me SWITCH!?
« on: March 27, 2010, 03:27:43 PM »
I replaced both bulbs in both fog lamps and replaced my fog lamp relay only to see the fog lamps come on and not able to shut off!  The fog lamps come on as soon as the relay is plugged in and only shut off when the relay is pulled - regardless of what I do with the steering column switch.  I have read on the net that it is most likely the 'multifunction' headlight/foglight switch?

Has anyone had a similar problem?  And does anyone have a column switch/lever assembly they want to part with?  Or does anyone know where I can find one cheap?  All I need it to do is turn the fog lamps on and off.  I have thought of an accessory toggle switch, but like the clean, factory look.

Did you wire in the relay switch yourself? If so make sure
the wire from the relay to the fog lights is s attached to the #87
terminal of the relay and not the #87A

All I did was replace the relay with a new one because when I bought the Jeep it did not even have a relay - it was missing!!  Hence the for lamps were not working.  Hmm, I wonder why?  I am wondering if the previous owner took the relay out because he had the same problem - not being able to turn them off.

Is it possible the relay could be wrong - even though it fits?  Are there any other solutions?  Anything...?  I'm not sure about the 87 and 87A wires???

Do the lights stay on with the ignition turned off?

Yes, the fog lamps stay on with the ignition off and key out.

I'm havin the exact same problem. Wired in some lights using a relay, power from battery and they are spliced into the high beams to come on with them. They stay on after you shut the Jeep off. Unplug the lights and they go out, but plug them back in hours later and they come on again, without the key.

This is a very common problem, my TJ is doing the same thing. The multifunction switch will get debris stuck in it over time. This will cause the contacts to stick and not go back to N.O. you can take the switch apart and clean it up it may help. If not you can get a new multifunction switch from the dealership or junkyard if your lucky. There is an article about this in this months or last months JP magazine. Good luck. Like my buddy told me the factory look is nice, but custom is cheap!
