J30 Transmision Over Heat Recall

Hi,

As some of you know there is a Jeep JK recall rolling around.  Recall J30:

Basically they are accounting for Jeeps starting on fire and such due to inadequate transmissions.  The J30 "FIX" is to add a dummy light (HOTOIL) to the system to warn you that your Tranny is overheating.  Then your supposed to stop what you are doing and let it cool off....

In my opinion this is really not adequate to resolve this issue.  

I have written to Transport Canada about this issue... may never help but I encourage you to do so as well....

In review of your concern, may we point out that the purpose of the warning system is to prevent transmission temerature elevation that could lead to possible fire and or transmission destruction. We concur with the manufacturer that their addition of a transmission oil temperature instrument warning and chime system is adequate in this instance. Transport Canada has not received any reports of this problem occurring in Canada.

For your information, other manufacturers such as General Motors for example, provide transmission temperature warning systems on certain off-road,

heavy-duty, and four wheel drive vehicles.

We provide the following additional information and explanation:
Transport Canada administers the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This act provides that if a vehicle manufacturer becomes aware of a defect that may affect the safe operation of a motor vehicle, they are required by this Act and Canadian law to notify the Minister of Transport, and the owners of the affected vehicles that a Safety-Related Defect exists. The defect must occur without prior warning to the vehicle operator, and affect a certain identifiable group or class of vehicles. There is no Federal requirement that they compensate the vehicle owner, but most do, as a customer satisfaction concern. This may depend on vehicle age, condition, kilometerage and warranty considerations.

Please be aware that Transport Canada is not a consumer protection agency. Transport Canada's mandate does not permit intervention or negotiation with vehicle manufacturers on behalf of individual consumers with respect to any warranty and financial concerns or disputes. This is the responsibility of consumer agencies, organizations or groups, or the courts. Transport Canada cannot force manufacturers or their dealers to refund unsatisfactory or disputed monitory transactions, nor take back recently purchased vehicles.

I would think a bigger tranny cooler would help. Too bad Chrysler won't install it on their dime but for your own piece of mind I would suggest looking into it yourself.

Yah... I realized this last year... this recall only confirmed it.   I already had intentions of installing a tranny cooler.... I wish Chrysler would at least subsidize the part...  oh well.

My buddy had bought an 08 tacoma late in 07.  For his work, he needed to carry ~500 lbs of gear to and from work, usually traveling 3-400 kms per day going from jobsite to jobsite.  In about a month, the the rear springs were dead.  The box was rated to carry 1200 lbs.  He did some reading, and turns out this is a common problem in those trucks.  Took it back to the dealer (under warranty) they said he overloaded his truck.  He showed them the equipment, took a service manager out to the weight scales, weighed it, unloaded all his junk, weighed it again, and the work gear was ~500lbs (i dont remember the exact weight).

They changed his springs, month later, same thing.  Dealer said "too bad".  He had to work his way up to Toyota Canada and they finally signed off on some aftermarket parts for his truck.  It took a long time...I would have jammed that truck up Toyotas arse as it doesnt do what they advertise it too do...but he got it fixed up pretty good and he was happy with it.

I guess during one conversation he said to them, "How good do you think it looks when my new truck is listing like the titanic going down the highway?  Do you think that looks good for Toyota?"  After that statement, they became more conducive to helping him out...allegedly.

My cousin bought o 07 Tundra which was the biggest lemon ever built,Toyota refused to fix the problem he was having with the transmission (again they were blaming him for towing too much weight ) He cut out a huge lemon shape out of plywood,painted it yellow and wrote "my new Toyota is a lemon" and listed all the problems he had with the truck on the lemon,mounted it in the bed and parked at the place next door to the Toyota dealer,they soon came around to fixing all the troubles he was having,and eventually the truck got bought back from Toyota.

I hope Chrysler handles the problems both with the trannys and with the oil consumption problem on the 4.0l v6 well,they dont need any unhappy customers right now.
