fluid level

ok heres my problem

i neeed to know how high my fluid level should be in my rear diff

because my pinion is turned up my fill hole is no longer at the stock level

so should i drill and tap a new hole a inch above so it lines up with the tubs . should there be oil in the tubes . (not full to the top of tubes)   but like a half inch so oil can reach the outer bearings ??

any input please

jack it up with floor jack then fill it as usual.

parkbackwards on the driveway/slight grade and fill her up.

i did both of those .. front wheels in the street and jacked up the rear and the stock fill hole is still lower then the tubes

I had no problems filling my rear diff using the stock fill hole on level ground.  Just put in the recommended amount of fluid.  ( 2L ? or little under... can't recall...)

Check you diff. tags...it's written the amount you need (in Ounces)

i understand i can fill it but my question is  is there supose to be oil in the tubes so the axle shaft bearings get oil   if thats the case ill need to drill a new hole higher up

or find a steep hill and reverse up it

I don't think that the tubes are supposed to be full of oil. Your diff would take an awful lot of oil if that were the case. As far as I've seen, the oil is actually carried by the axles to the bearings, and they're basically just a splash lube bearing anyhow. I don't think that the fluid level in my 8.8 has ever been that high (even with an aftermarket cover).

i dont mean full    but at least a little in the tubes for the outer bearings   but if the axle shafts carry it outward to the bearings then im fine at the level it is now

Or just jack it up from the rear diff as suggested, alot easier than drivin around looking for a steep hill to wrench on!

like i said i did jack the rear and the fill hole is still lower thent he bottem of the axle tubes so


i gues what my question is      am i suspose to fill so theres some oil 1/4 inch of oil in the axle tubes or does the oil get carriered from the axle shafts to the bearings

If you put the recommended amount of fluid in there, you are golden.  It's going to work.

your diff has inner seals does it not? even if you were to fill it to the top, a minimal amout of fluid would get to those outer bearings anyway...

nope no inneer seals .   just the locker and the bearings on the carrier     


well i guess ill see what happends with the amount i have now

behind your carrier bearings are inner axle seals....
