custom YJ cold air intake
« on: April 26, 2010, 09:17:59 AM »
well, i've wanted some increased power gains from my YJ so i thought about making a custom 'cold air intake' with an open filter element to increase airflow.  now moneys tight, but i found a pretty cheap solution.  what do you think?

instantly i noticed huge increased throttle response; the jeep just jumped off the start; even chirped the tires. pretty good for the cost of a roll of duct tape.

now, this is the only performance mod i've made on the 4 L engine, and it just jumped to life; so that has to be why my YJ moves now.

the only other thing i've done is swapped in a healthy 4L that actually runs on  cylinders instead of 5,but i think the power gain is from my open air element.  what do you guys think?

well originally i was gonna put in a cone filter, but i thought 'this is much cheaper and essentially the same thing'.  the airbox is just so restricting; getting rid of it made a world of difference

i think i got a 20hp gain easily ;)

I think you need a sticker to get a full 20hp john.  True gains before the sticker is actually 17.8 hp.

My only concerns would be having the duct tape get wet and come off..... goodbye filter and having the paper filter facing down allowing all the debri from the road or trails to easily come into contact with it.

Could you not  cut take the stock box and cut out an end and the side closest to the wheel well off, this would would hold the filter in place and should protect the filter from debris, and allow the same amount of airflow, it should also help the intake pull in colder air from the fender side instead of the hotter air from by the engine.

You may also want to secure the housing to the grill support, the tube could break or come off at the throttle body if you get bouncing a little bit on a trail.

but it was cold ;)
unfortunately, the airbox doesn't fit with the new PS pump resevoir, so i'll be fitting a K&N cone to it tomorrow.  not a fan of them but its better than the current setup;)

What about the amsoil cone?

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaau.aspx

I've heard they are better, dry element.  Cleanable to a certain extent and throw away.

Johnny, your old PS pump and reservoir will transfer over.  I ran into the same problem when I swapped in an XJ engine

in theory, yes, but i um, maybe kind of broke it..........  i broke the bolt (somehow) holding the YJ mount off. so instead of drilling said bolt out, i said fawk it and just swapped the whole unit over.

no biggie i hope
