odd starting issue

I have had a few issues with the jeep with starting.

some times when I try to start the jeep it will have all the lights on but nothing will happen with the starter.
I have replaced the battery, the solenoid, and I think I have found out what may be wrong.
I think it has something  to do with the shifter.
I found out after trying to start it and bumped the shifter(this is an auto) that it started right up without a problem.
it will also start in neutral I found out the other day.

I figure this will be a switch of some sort.
any idea what is is called, where it is and a rough price for it.

Transmission position sensor...... or something close to that. You used to be able to bypass it easily on non cpu vehicles by simply by cutting out the switch, first you would need to figure out if the switch sends constant signal unless it is in park or if it only sends signal in P or N. Then direct wire it to provide the appropriate signal for starting.

You may also just have a dirty contact that needs cleaning, I had a similar problem with a bad switch on a clutch due to filling the cab with sand.

You are thinking of a nutreal safty switch, only allows starting when in park or N.  Unfortunatly in the AW4 tranny on the XJs its built into the a huge switch which also tells the tranny electronically what gears its in. On a regular tranny is a $20 part on an AW4 I hear its $200-$300.

Try removing it and cleaning it. Its on the passenger side opf the tranny just behind the bell housing.

Would this switch also be used for the signal that allows you to go from 4Hi to 4Lo?  If it is that may be away to test if the switch is causing the issue or not...... It would be worth cleaning a good cleaning regardless.

I know on my old XJ you had to put it into neutral before it would even engage the 4x4, does 4HI engage?

I was thinking it was the neutral safety switch too and it will engage in 4 hi as well as 4 low with out any issues(sometimes a little rough, but usually fine.


I will have to try and clean it. hopefully that will work ok as it is hit or miss. sometimes it will work without any issue, other times it takes a few tried to get it to fire up.

4hi should engage/disengage at any speed... 4low requires the neutral trick.
