Tire Swapping
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:27:16 PM »
The skinny:
So i just bought a set of tires for a good deal, but they're on the wrong bolt pattern rims (which are for sale ;)). I want to swap them onto my stock jeep rims that i am running now. however i have on order another set of rims that eventually i want these new tires to be on when they arrive putting the tires currently on my stock rims BACK onto my jeep rims so i have two sets of tires (winter/summer)... confused yet?

so my question is where is the best place yall know of to dismount/mount and balance tires. is there anyone out there can does this either for money or beer? if the costs add up to much ill just have to forgo the new tires for maylong but i would really love to get them on the heep. I dont have tire-pliers but i've looked around the internet and noticed the hijack method, but i am hesitant to try it for fear of wrecking something.

Let me know your thoughts

im pretty lucky i just go to the dealer ship my brother works at and i do them my self and his boss doesnt mind

he owes me since ive done a couple late night rescues when he got his truck stuck

best bet might be small garages that dont have lots of work right now you might be able to make a deal with them .

they seem to charge less then the big boys do

check kijiji, look for "tire installation"

Depending where you live, there are some guys who do it out of their garage, one guy I know in the NW does a real good job, and he is cheap.

I also know walmart is extremely cheap...and I also know Kal Tire is not.

I know this guy in the NW does tire swaps.
I bought a motor off him and he was a good guy.
he is also a fire fighter so he should be trustworthy too.

on a side note, I do work at a tire shop!
depending on what size tires they are and what the rims are(meaning they have to be within spec for the tire)
I could help you out too.

if they were loose that help too.

shoot me a pm with specs on the tires and rims and I can let you know if we can do it at work.  :)

I bought one of those manual tire changers from Princess Auto. Works quite well, needs a couple modifications though. I don't balance my own, but a local shop lets me do it on his machine for some beer. Works out well :)

just pay to have it done correctly.  jays rates are more than reasonable;

seen more than one bead destroyed because the 'best deal' guy or the 'guy who'll do it for a case of beer' just doesn't care............  problem is you find out after its all said and done.......

why don't you wait till your new bling bling rims are here and save yourself 200$?

I guess it depends on how many tires are being mounted.
that would be a lot of sets of tires, almost 5 sets

you guys will dismount 5 tires from one set of rims then mount/balance said tires on another set of rims 5x for 200?  if my math works out, you will do one set of 5 for 40$ which works out just under 8$/tire.  you will mount/install a tire for 8$?

last time i was a canadian tire, it was 60 bux and i thought that was pretty good. that was for the brand new tires we bought.  so ya. 200?  thats about what i'd expect from a guy mounting dismounting twice.

so ya. if you you can guarantee 8$ a tire....... you are now my 'tire guy' for sure!    or is that for a standard civic tire on a black steelie?

last set of tires i had done asides from the canadian tire ones were fountain tire. cost me 120$......

so ya. i stand by it. do it once; and save your tires beads life.

I was ball parking it, but it is 11 bucks, lots of restrictions and we don't usually work on tires not bought at costco, but I can usually work something out.

I was thinking 4 tires which work out to about 220, but to mount and balance 5 tires would be 55 plus tax.
this is usually the price for seasonal swaps.

even if it was the full rate it would be 15 bucks plus tax a tire.

so I guess 3-4 sets.

I would have to chat with the boss man and see what he said.
as it is more of an exception to the rule it is his call at what we charge.

but I do agree, might as well wait to mount the tires until the wheels arrive. it would cost alot if you had to remount on the new rims

but ya, 11-15 bucks a tire

too bad thats only on the 'instore' bought ones... be a great deal.

what i've been told is you go by the labour rate in a shop and how long it takes, is how long it takes at X dollars an hour.

i'm guessing when you buy a brand new set of tires they cut you a deal, probalby cause you just bought tires......

in short dude, if you can't find someone you know or what not to do multiple swaps for ya (maybe zombie can help you out?)  then just wait!!!!!

it really does not work out to make much money for us.
I think the pricing is way off. I do not think that it actually represents the time that it takes to do the work.
I think it should be based on a number of different things(performance rating, aspect ratio and overall size and load range)

This gets hard to do in our shop as we work on so many vehicles that pricing things out would get a little harder.

it is a great deal for sure.

I know it does not cost the same amount of money or take the same time to mount some 175/70r13's  on steel wheels as it does some 35's or some 255/45zr19's on new or custom wheels.

I can have a small car done in about 10 minutes if things go well, or take an hour to mount and balance some 33's on new wheels(I was doing this today and I didn't want to have a single scratch on the wheels.

I think i would have some different pricing to show what it actually costs to do the work.

just my rant.

but ya, it is a good deal, and I do want to talk with the boss and see if he will let me do some stuff for more jeepers ;)
