Dana 30 Front Axle shafts
« on: May 25, 2010, 11:15:46 AM »
AS it says, I need front axle shafts for my ZJ.  but I want the ones from an XJ, with the u-joint, not the cv-joint.  Any one have?  Passanger, and Drivers, but the Passanger is higher priority ;D

Many ZJs also came with the u-joint style.

FYI    I've had a ZJ with AWD and u-joint in the D30. It was a LTD package with no trailer hitch package and 3.55s. My sister has the exact same jeep(year, V8, NP249 etc) except that hers has the trailer package, 3.73 diffs and CV shafts.

My offroader, also a 1993 LTD V8, came with the tow package, upcountry package, 3.73s diffs and CVs. You would think that of them all that one would have come with u-joints....

maybe 'your' jeeps are just weird clay.    ;D

or was it something with the 93s? regardless, if you're in the junkyard, take a look at the axle. its easy to tell if its a CV or not ;)

ZJs. such a love hate relationship ;)

As far as I know, the ZJ only came with factory U-joints with the 231 or 242 cases and only in the early years. Dana-Spicer lists the '93 as using the smaller 5-260X shafts, while later models had the larger 5-297X shafts. I got my 297X shafts from a wrecked '98 XJ and swapped the ABS tone rings over from my CV axles, worked a charm. If you plan on overhauling the 297X axle shafts before installation, Dana-Spicer replaced the 5-297X U-joint with the stronger 5-760X so that should be the new U-joint you put in. AFAIK the larger U-joints will not fit in the smaller 260X shafts due to the differences in bearing cap diameter. (1.062" vs 1.188")
