challenging the HAM exam
« on: May 28, 2010, 10:02:12 PM »
I'm thinking that this coming year, I'd like to challenge the HAM exam.

I could do a course, but I think I'd like the challenge of....well...challenging the exam.  :D  I hear there are differences between the US and Canadian regulations, exams, etc.

Is there anyone who could point me to some good online reference sites for Canadians?  I have already found the government practice exam software.

Challenging the exam is not hard at all if you've got a reasonable grounding in math, physics, and electronics. The RAC study guide is about $60 - I picked mine up at NTF communications. I studied the study guide, and worked through the online exam generator from Industry Canada once a day for a month, and found that I was well prepared for the exam.

Much of the exam content is in areas that you're not likely to use - after all, not a lot of people build Yagi antennas for their Jeeps  :o
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Nice thing about being a teacher is that if you have to teach students how to study, you better be able to do it yourself.

Just trying to find a consensus on what I need to know, want to get.  Is there any real reason to do the extra exam and get the Advanced certification....as in I am not going to set up a home ham shop, or build my own equipment....probably purchase instead of modify?

If you're looking to run a mobile rig in your Jeep, the basic license will cover everything you need.

If you want to get into mobile HF (longer wavelengths and ability to talk over longer distances), then the Basic (plus) qualification will probably cover everything you need. You get that by scoring over 80% on the exam - not too hard to do if you apply yourself to studying.

Advanced would only be needed if you want to build your own gear, or run big amplifiers - neither of those things is all that practical to do in a Jeep. Myself and most of the guys that I've seen with rigs in their Jeeps seem to run VHF/UHF rigs. With the repeater coverage that exists in Souther Alberta, VHF can do a lot.

If you want, give me a call. IThere's a lot of ground to cover, and every question that gets answered leads into another question  :)
