XJ Tranny Rattle
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:44:09 AM »
So I tried to search this topic before posting this but I was unable to get a proper explanation...

I have a 98 XJ and ever since I bought it the automatic transmission has been producing a slight rattle in first gear between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM's. It seems like a hollow knocking sound. It's fairly quiet but most noticable when accelerating from a stop, turning left or right from a stop, or even slowly acending an incline like a driveway. It will knock 5 or 6 times, then it goes away.

It sounds like its coming from under the center consol below the shifter on the passenger side, but i guess it could be originating from anywhere...

The tranny shifts fine and selecting gears is not a problem. part-time, full-time, and 4LOW all work fine.

Any ideas to fix this minor annoyance?

The exhaust runs right over the tranny crossmemeber about there. There should be a rubber mount coming off of the rear tranny mount to keep the exhaust from moving. Might want to check it out. Also check the tranny mount while you are there.

One of the most common Jeep rattles is the t-case shifter and linkage.
