synthetic vs non in diff

i have heard that it is not nessisarily a good decision to run synthetic in your diffs can anyone tell me why? or offer reasons what oil to go with as i am installing new gears .

Because if you offroad lot in mud or do any water crossings, craps gets in the diff and you should be changing the oil to have clena oil anyways and dino oil is just fine.  Plus at triple the price it would get pretty expensive.

with your jeep so low and your diffs so low the probability of getting water in there is good for you Dana ;)

use the cheapest stuff you can get your hands on for the 'break in' period.  you will be swapping that gear oil out in 500km anyways, so don't go synthetic.  grab a couple gallons of 80w90 and goto town

Most synthetic oils have additives that makes limited slip and lockers ...slip, not function properly (for a lack of a better word).... if you run a locking differential; use regular 80W90.


I even tried limited slip oil for my TrueTrac and it worked too much. It was grabing too much on the warm gears and limited my turning like if I was fully locked. It was also making scarry noises.

Stick with reg. 80W90... like the boys said... since you use your Heep to offroad; you'll change your fluids often anyways..

18 l buckets of 80W90 at Walmarde for $35 is what I use....

yup already got my break in oil, was just wondering what to run everyday.

Maple Syrup works well.  ;D
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Hey Ron, I have only used dino oil with my ARBs.  However, I think that the rubi diffs do required synthetic.

You are correct.  I was thinking my own lockers which are detroits.  I have a locker in my chev which requires synth.
