92 xj electrical problems
« on: February 12, 2006, 05:47:34 PM »
Just bought a used 92 xj and when I picked it up the headlights didn't work so I looked under the hood the wiring harnes near the front conecting the head lights was on hooked so I hooked it up and everything worked fine but when I got it home the lights wouldn't turn off so i got out to check the conector again and it was smoking and melted. Any thoughts? You'd think it would have blown a fuse and not melted the conector!

electrical problems HELP

Ok this is what I've figured out so far.

The female side of the conector has 8 plugs while the male side has 6

There are 3 pins on the female side that are hot with the ignition off and the lights off, two of them connect to the male side (red with orange stripe and purple with white stripe) the third pin does not seem to have a connector on the male side but is still hot (pink with green stripe) The pins that seem to be melted are the purple with white stripe and the pink with green stripe.

Anybody who knows anything about cherokee wiring and wants to come over and give me a hand would be great. (this is way more confusing than my old CJ) I've got the haynes manual but the diagrams are greek to me. I can provide beer and munchies

Well if the lights won't turn off then I would say its probably either the swt on the dash or the relay. I'm guessing relay but without looking at the system and a diagram its hard to diagnose.

would a bad switch or relay melt the conector on the harness??

I've got another switch to try but where's this relay located?

Also I just found its got a kill switch wired in and an alarm.  The alarm I knew about but just found this little key/plugin thing under the steering wheel that shuts the engin down and wont let it start unless its plugged in.

It could if that is that is the wiring harness going to the swt or if the wiring has a short it could have shorted out the swt which could have caused the wiring to melt without the fuse blowing.

Wish I could help more, its hard to diagnose without being there.

Ill bet that your problem is the daytime headlight module, ive seen this before on a few other jeeps. the headlights just stay on no matter what you do, try unplugging the module and see if the lights turn off, it should be (standing in front of the jeep with the hood open) on the far left upper corner, near the heater motor, its a lil black box with about 7 wires going to it.
