Setting Pinion Angle
« on: June 28, 2010, 09:25:53 PM »
I going to set up my perches on my D44 , and will be using a tom woods hack ' n tap and driveshaft on my NP242...from what i understand i want the pinion angle on the d44 to be basicall pointing directly at the t-case? Minus 3 degrees?  Anyone with a little more clarification?  I dont want to weld the new perches on the axle until i am sure what my angles need to be.
Getting grumpier every day.

That's about it, slightly below pointing at the t-case so that when you tromp on the go pedal and the pinion rotates up from the axle wrap it doesn't snap the u-joint.

Doing the same thing with a D35 axle out of a Cherokee going into a YJ with a 3 inch lift.

With the rear will go 3 degrees down.

Question, what angle for the front end?

I went from 4.11 to 3.55 so have to change out the front also. (3.55 where sitting in the shop and might lower the revs going down the highway)

Cost of the swap so far is just grinders disks and welding supplies.

Total side bar, but did you reduce your gearing?   :o

The reason for going down is I am out on the prairie... no hills... mainly used for hunting... the odd 5 hour run to Banff or 4 hours to Edmonton.

Had the 3.55's sitting around for a couple of years now, so no cost to me.

With the 4.11 I am doing 3000 rpm @ 60 mph, if the 3.55's get me down to 2500 rpm will be happy.

Having fun with the learning curve on stripping an axle and welding on brackets and perches.

Yeah, couple degrees down for axle wrap is the answer

Front of a YJ with vacum disco, set the perches based on castor. 5-6 degrees for 33's.  Ignore the driveline angle.
