Odd Squeak!

So I came home from a trip down the highway with a squeak that I can't find.

2003, 4.0l TJ, 31's with stock gears, and 2" bb

1) Sounds to be from the front (possibly from drivers side)

2) Only under moderate acceleration, unnoticeable during soft and hard acceleration.

3) Does not occur while 4wd is engaged only in 2wd.

4) Just had all the diffs, tranny, oil, and transfer case changed today, still not any better.

5) pulled the belt and hand cleaned the pullies/belt with massive amounts of belt dressing (joking)

6) can rev motor all I want and there is no squeak.

7) seams to disapear at about 50km.


Any thoughts? or experiences

front drive shaft U joint  ;)  probly in the duel cardon joint pack it full of greese see if it goes away

Well I am pretty sure it is the Ujoints, but the squeak has been replaced with an occasional clunk, same location, but only under initial loading.

They probably need to be done anyways so my question is this?

What should I buy to replace the OEM ones (front and driveshaft)? Price? where? I am 80% road 20% play (hopefully more as the kids get older. I may upgrade to 33's this summer but other than that I am mostly stock.)

Looks simple enough to do, what will I need for tools, if I can swap a motor can I handle this easily?

What sould be a good price for having soemone else change out front ujoints and drive shaft ujoints if I decide I don't have the time or patients?

greaseable vs non?

i use the greasable ones with the nipple in  the cap not in  the cross

The problem is your stereo is not loud enough.  Just turn it up louded and no more squeek   ;D ;D

I use  the non-greasable Spicer snaptite ones. They have a hard plastic seal/ring instead of the regular rubber ones and snap onto the cups with a really positive seal and come prepacked with synthetic grease. I have yet to have one fail due water contamination or lack or grease, if fact the ONLY one I've had fail in the 5 years I've been using them was because of a really bad angle on the rear driveshaft.

I agree with Clay, as I use the same joints and they are great

That is exactly the reason I got them.  I am lazy and greaseable joints are only good if you grease them

Make sure there is grease in the cross before you install them, Spicer is well known for lack of lubrication in those Ujoints. I've had to add grease to mine straight out of the box. :o

hopefully I will get to this project this week, where is a good place/price/model for the spicers? is replacing these really as simple as it looks?

If you have a ujoint tool its simple.  Just takes the confidence of doing it the first time.

Arggggg..... No play in the drive shafts, to be sure they were not the problem I removed each and tested separately with no change in clunking noise, there was some play in the driver front axle u joint so I swapped that one out.... and still have the odd clunking sound.

I Did notice that I could turn the front drive shaft about 1/8 to 1/4 quarter inch before it would engage/connect with the internal gears, should there be any "slack"?

The sound had gone away for a couple of days, then early last week I hit the train tracks on Barlow at about 75km and noticed some wobble in the front and of course the sound returned.

Could this be a suspension issue? any thoughts or ideas to try next, anyone in the NW feel like trying their hand at figuring this out?
