No Turnover

Hey i have a 99 Tj that doesnt seem to want to start it clicks but wont turnover all the time sometimes it will start first try others it takes up to five six attempts then will start. do i need a new starter???? or what can i do to fix this. all electrical comes on no problem just wont turn.

i read around the threads to see if there was any but none seemed to have the same problem as this

tighten your battery cables.

while your at it, clean them up real nice.

I'd also check the cables actually running to the starter, I had this problem once

if the cables are good and the battery is good&charged, the starter is bad.  the clicking is the solonoid engaging the starter gear onto the flywheel.  the lack of "turning over" means the starter isn't spinning.  it requires a lot of power so yea, cables can be loose.

most likely you need a new starter.  i have gone through 2 on a 1997 so your first on a 99 aint too bad.

Or your battery is toast.  Is it the original battery?

no the battery is fine only a year old now i will chech the connections to the starter tomorrow and see what it may be but thank you for all the input everyone

you check the connection? 

if its just clicking thats a battery/power problem.  check the connections, make sure they're clean and tight. do you have a voltmeter? check the battery to ensure its even charged.  if you have a short thats sapping up juice when the jeeps off or something, you're gonna feel stupid after dropping 145 on a new starter..........

start with the cheap stuff first, before you start throwing parts at stuff.

ah something just hit me but not sure if it could be it i did install a set of piaa headlights and a little led light does stay on 24/7 could that create enough drain??

that wont help anything, but LED's dont use much power, so I cant see it being traced back to that.

based on this, there is a chance you are draining the battery with this set of lights due to something drawing power when they shouldnt.

Like Johnny said, check your connections at the battery, likely one of the clamps that attaches to the battery post is loose, or there is a ton of corrosion and there is little to no connections left between the battery and the cables.  Next bust out a voltmeter, or if you dont have one, drop 15-20$ at canadian tire and check the battery for charge.  Then check the starter for loose connections if the battery is good.

95% sure you have a loose connection at your battery, especially since you just changed it out last year.
