XJ Roof Rust
« on: July 17, 2010, 07:07:42 PM »
So my recently bought jeep has some rust on the roof, right now it has some bluing and some cracking/chipping(?) paint and a bit of the bubblies on the front passenger corner. What would be the best course of action; I'd like to get this fixed, preferably before winter comes along.. For a reasonable price  ::)

Wasn't the rust on the roof above the A-pillars a standard feature on all XJ's? :D

My 99 had it when I got it 5 years ago and hasn't gotten any worse.

But if you're doing it on the cheap I'd just grind/sand/fill/prime and paint yourself - it's the roof which nobody sees and it's a jeep so it doesn't have to look good.

I blasted it, cut out the infected metal, made new parts, welded it in grind and filled and its all gone now:)

So similar deal as what Tyn Pow said? i figured that was my only option if i dont want to spend over a thousand; i heard some do it for a few hundred, but i figure for that price i could probably do it better myself..

unfortunately i dont have the equipment to weld things.. not too sure i know what you mean though.

Be careful. XJ's are a unibody design, so that rust may be a stressed structural member... ???
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

If the rust is gnarly do what Jenssen said.  If it's just surface rust on the roof panel itself you can cheap out and patch it up yourself, if you're up to the task
