you can if you take apart your axle shafts and replace your outer ( the stubby outside ends)  they hold your unit bearing together .. so if there not in then your unit bearing will come apart and youll loose your wheel and ripp out you break lines

very messy

use a grade 8, 3/4 or 1 inch bolt with some washers tighten the squirt out of it, and if you want the oil to stay in put some tennis beans in the tube, they fit perfect.

PS i wouldn't hit the highway or deer foot like that but it will get you bye

I don't know about this idea...

If you want to drive w/o front axle shafts, just get a second  set from the wreckers and install just the stub axle (short outer part) that is all you need to keep the bearing from seperating...and as far as the oil goes, this may sound crazy, but you could "drain" it...It's this weird thing you're supposed to do anyway once and a while...oh yeah a refilling it after couldn't hurt either.

i'm gonna jump in here and help you out before someone flames you;

with the shafts out and the stubs in, (and the vehicle in 2wd) the front diff won't spin. i'd take the DS off for pewps and giggles. that is, as long as you have somewhere to drain it
