Inspection
« on: September 03, 2010, 01:25:02 PM »
Hello fellow Jeepers, I'm nearly finished the XJ build (I'm going to eat those words later).  I need to have a safety inspection done before the station wagon will see any action.  I think I've got the basic understanding of what to look for/fix,  but I'm sure I'll miss something.  Any tips?  Does anyone have any stories of stupid crap they've been caught for on inspection?  Any insight or humorous anecdotes are welcome and appreciated.

+1 for Jay.

I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I was failed once because my signal light blinked too slow. The guy was real dick, everytime I fixed something on it and took it back he'd find something else. Instead of doing the whole inspection and listing everything he'd stop as soon as he found something. After the 4th visit back even the service manager was fumed at him and so signed off the inspection for me.

Thats when I decided I wanted to sign off my own inspections and signed up at SAIT for the automotive program.

I didn't think you could sign off on your own, or your immediate family. The whole conflict of interest thing...

@ Clay, Wow man, it sounds like you had a real jerk on your hands there  :o I'm glad the manager straightened that out for you.  My blinkers are not the fastest, I hope that isn't a major issue.  All the lights are now functional, & I got a couple good as new tail lights with bulbs and harnesses off of another '89 at pick and pull for $11.99 a pop this weekend.  No rust on them at all.

@ Pook, hopefully I don't discover any inappropriate zip-tie action on my Jeep!  I did replace the ebrake cables, along with 90% of the entire braking system, so hopefully I don't run into any snags there.

As far as going to Chanda goes, I've heard good things, but I'm still residing up in the 'chuck so I'll have to find a shop up here.

Does "the 'chuck" mean Edmonchuck? If so, does anyone know if Bear does inspections?

Heh heh, I did mean Edmontown, and I haven't called Bear TraX to find out if they do that sort of work.

Where did you hear that? I do it all the time. NEVER on anything that won't actually pass though. Not risking my license(or family) on a vehicle that won't pass a basic safety inspection. DUH!

My Dad, who was a licensed mechanic for over 50 years before he retired. I'd ask my SAIT instructors before I'd risk my license though. Duh!

While we're on the subject of inspections... anyone ever gone through a salvage vehicle inspection, or know exactly what it entails?

I've heard varying reports and horror stories, just wondering whether it's worth the time/expense/hassle.
