Hi All, I have a 5.5" long arm RE suspension that is 18 months old. Mostly road driven but used for off-road on occasion by someone who doesn't know how to drive (me) and one day for some light jumping (me again). The right rear leaf spring has sagged 1-1.5 inches and is having an affect on articulation. Last weekend I ran with the front stabilizer bar connected to minimize rear tire scrubbing in the wheel well and managed to break a front stabilizer link:( I spoke with the guys at Modern today and these are the stated options:
1) ignore it and hope the other side sinks to the same level. Problem is that I still want the 5.5" lift height for running my current 33" tires (with the hope of going to 35" this winter with new axles).
2) when I change the axles, get Standen's to add a leaf but not arc the spring pack. I would flip the springs right to left afterward. This may last a year.
3) buy a whole new spring pack and add a leaf. This may be the best option given I have added about 1000 lbs of equipment to the rig and generally wheel with 3-4 people on board. The obvious down side is the cost.
4) find a mystery store that will make custom springs. I'm told such a store does not exist in Calgary which surprised me.
What is the experience with adding a leaf to an already sagging set of springs? Does anyone know of someone who could build custom leaf springs and what would that cost be relative to the total cost of paying for a new set of RE springs and then having Standen's add a leaf? Would I be better off just buying that Sherman Tank I've always wanted and wheel with that instead and use the XJ as a "dinghy"?
