Compass ?
« on: October 23, 2010, 08:12:33 AM »

My cousin is very eager to get a 2007 Jeep Compass. Anyone  here own one and know if it's suitable to be taken offroad from time to time?

from what I've heard it's rated above a Honda CRV or a Nissan Rogue for capability off road, but you'd need to make sure he got the 4wd sport i think it is, otherwise you're stuck with a FWD jeep in the mud...

The other thing is, I don't know how available a lift is for one, and there is a lot of plastic on the body, so I'd be prepared to get a few cracks unless his off roading will be limited to logging roads.

I think that if you consider the trunk road to be off-roading, then a Compass might be an OK choice. A Compass might offer more ground clearance than a Subaru WRX. Maybe...

they have lifts and sliders.
i wouldnt push it too hard off road, but if you want a cheep daily driver that you could take on some backroads then it would work pretty good. i prefer the patriot over the compass because of the looks and interior, but otherwise drivetrain and chassis are identical.

Those mods would be better than nothing....but...a lift kit will make that an offroad rig exaclty the same way that a neck tattoo will make Justin Bieber a bad@ss.  ;D

The wife owns one and I would NEVER take it off road.  Too low to the ground and IFS.  Not even trail Rated by Jeep.  IMO not close to being tough enough for trails.

A friend at work drives a Compass, it's all he managed to hang on to in the divorce.  It's got a decent stereo, and the ride was ok, but for all the reasons that matter it's just a decent domestic car.  I would say that gravel roads are about the most severe terrain it is capable of conquering.

When I was buying the TJ, I was talking to the sales rep about the new Compass. He recommended against off-roading it, and mentioned Jeep didn't trail rate it.
