Car Starter
« on: November 04, 2010, 07:56:23 AM »
With winter right around the corner, i'm thinking of installing a Car Starter on my 2dr JK.  Can anyone recommend one, that hasn't given you problems even if you take it 4x4ing.  The last thing I want to do, is install something that won't work after I go 4x4ing.

Thanks

I have a Viper 5901 in my truck.  I like the fact it lets you know if it starts or not and doubles as an alarm (not that the alarm is worth it for the truck).  The range on the fob is unreal.  Costs more but it's worth it.

Picked it up at autotemp air and sound.  I believe Visions has a sale on them right now too.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.

Aftermarket car starters are the number 1 cause of electric gremlins, and other electric issues.

If you have to have a remote starter, I'd strongly recommend not taking a chance with it, and go with something OEM from Mopar.

Mopar only makes a Automatic Transmission Starter.  I drive a 6 speed.

Also be aware that installing a car starter in your Jeep will mean that the clutch interlock on the started will need to be bypassed.

If you do decide to do this (I honestly wouldn't), I'd suggest getting someone with a LOT of experience at auto electronics to do the install. AutoTemp Air and Sound would be my pick.

working in various repair shops for 15 years now has proved this time and time again. after how much trouble and money these things have cost people over the years i will never install one in any of my own vehicles. invest the money into some good long underpants and an extra sweater.

Its all about the install. I've had good and bad ones. One was so bad when I went to remove it I found the connections had been made simply by scrapping some insulation off of the factory wire then wrapping the connecting wire around it and taping it up. No solder at all.

Many new vehicles have plug and and play modules which plug right into a factory harness and reduce the number of splices needed.

If you go with a highend system and a reputable shop you should get years of trouble free service. Don't expect it to last for ever though. Like any other component on your Jeep it too will eventually fail.

I had a Compustar 2way system on my 2001 Dodge diesel that worked quite well and a Viper system on my '89 Cherokee that was great for about 8 years and then the remote died and I didn't bother getting another.  Quinn security on 11stNE near Deerfoot mall did the one on my '89 XJ but that was over 10 years ago. They were good then but I've had no experience lately.

I would NOT have a system installed by the install shop at Future Shop, Best Buy or any other box name store. They typically just hire kids off the street to do installs.

I wouldn't buy an alarm from Quinn if I needed to...just some bad dealings with them over the years. I too would stick to Auto Temp, Audio Concepts, The Car Salon, or any other shop that has MECP (Mopbile Electronics Certification Program) qualified installers. I know that Visions, and all the shops I listed, installers are all certified, and if you're ever in doubt...ask. If they are, they have to be able to prove it.

I have an Auto Start two way alarm/starter, but I installed it myself. I've done this kind of stuff for quite a while, but I'm not doing much of it anymore on the side like I used to. Be sure that you're comfortable with whomever you decide to go with, don't just settle for the cheapest sale price. If your vehicle has a PATS system (or other style of stock vehicle security system), it may need to have an interface module installed so that the new starter/alarm can control the stock system.

Be advised, when you see that "installation is included" in the price of anything, this is a basic hookup and doesn't necessarily include things like door locks, interior lighting, or any needed relays or other accessories. Be sure to find out exactly what is needed before you agree to the purchase.

auto temp is a very good place. nice guys and great service.

I have had 3 compustar alarms in 3 different vehicles, one decided to crap itself after about 6 years(but I was selling it so I didn't do anything with it, just unplugged it), another in my cavalier(fried a brain and they replaced it for free(body shop paid for the labour as they had the car for 3 months working on it and fubard it.

3rd is in the Protege 5, only problem I had was a remote got stepped on and stopped working, replaced it and it works fine.

brother in law has a viper 2 way and he loves it

auto temp is a bunch of hacks, overpriced and do cheap installs. The Visions on macleod trail is the only place you want working on your jeep. Lifetime warrenty on the install say's it all.

here's what you do

make a plan to do something in the morning like make breafest for the kids or shower - you know - things the wife likes

ask her to go start the car ...

timing is important

next thing you know your discussing how that 30x30 garage is so right for this family

just saying ... cause somethings in life are ($ sucking) obsticles to the real things in life we need
