what model jk to buy
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:38:01 PM »
My sister was going to buy a compass bu she decided to go with a wrangler (not my convincing i swear) but doesnt want to spend all the extra for a rubi. I know i would buy a rubi as would a lot of the people here. 1. Theres not a lot of money to go for the upgrade  2. the jeep wont really be gettin much for aftermarket in regards to lift, tires etc and 3. It will probably never leave the pavement or if it does extremly mildly.

is there anything really wrong with getting the "x" model?  still a 4x4 with 6 cyl engine isnt it?
thanks for any insite

ive driven x models, saharas and rubi's. automatics and manual. 2 doors and 4 doors. for the everyday driver id say an X model is fine. the sahara offers more interior options and color matched flares. bang for the buck the x model can get upgrades down the road, but if your sister just wants an affordable 4wd with plenty of capability out of the box then go with the x. i do find the auto versions easier to drive on the x and saharas due to the gear ratios and the engine power band. the rubis are nice with the manual trans because the diff gears are lower. thats just my opinion. if she doesnt need the space the 2 door will perform better due to less weight compared to the 4 door. but the 4 doors arent all that bad in stock form.
pm if you have any other questions.

I have a Rubi, and I'm happy that I bought one...but if I wasn't wheeling it on a regular basis, and "X" would definitely be the way to go.

I don't know if they are standard equipment on the X model JKs or not, but tow points are bloody handy in this province, regardless of whether you plan to off road the Jeep.  Just my two cents.

Good point. I think that they're an option on the "X" model...but they're relatively easy to find and add on - unlike the two points for those unibody thingies  ::). Aftermarket bumpers generally include some good tow points too.

If the TJ ones will fit / work, I have a set of front tow hooks not in use (new bumper has shackle points).

I believe the mounting holes are farther apart on the JK. To be honest, I think that the JK front tow points are more secure anyways.

if and when the time for resale comes, it is always easier to sell a loaded/top of the line unit private party style, however if you are going to keep it forever/trade it in then it isnt such a big deal, IMHO and in my experience.

I would say rubicon, because when you gut it, the parts you remove will be worth more cash hahah
