So where does everyone buy their Tires?
« on: November 18, 2010, 02:02:17 PM »
I used to work in the tire biz here in Calgary and used to give and receive some incredible deals on tires. For example, I would sell a tire to friends for cost plus $20 installed and balanced, I would also receive this deal in return since leaving the tire biz. Where'd did all the guys willing to give a fair deal to a guy go? Seems like everyone wants to rip everyone off these days, do they not realize we are not all dumb schmucks that don't have a clue about what the actual cost on a tire is BEFORE they mark it up? I see a ton of guys running TOYO MT's, Do you guys actually pay the $330 (for 33's) and up price tag on those things? Where are the deals to be had?  I'm having a hard time believing that nobody can beat Costco's price.

Depends on what you want.

Keep in mind that there is cute little place at the border called "at the border storage" and if you can find a set of tire on ebay that offer free shipping in the states, you ship it to these guys, you pay them a very small amount, bring them across the border yourself and save on brokerage, however you have to make the trip down there.

I think they are at the sweetgrass/coutts border.

I just put a set of tires on a company truck at fountain tire, 285/70/18 goodyear duratracs.  I had them studded, installed, balanced, paid tax and it was <1400 out the door.  I thought that was pretty good for a pretty uncommon tire size (but I didnt care because I did pay for them either).

jeepjones try here http://www.ntwonline.com its in the US but they ship. and its still going to be cheeper than buying localy.

Parabs. so when I ship the tires to that place and then go pick it up, will the customs officer ask why your going to the US? and if you say just picking up tires from a warehouse, would you be required to pay customs fees?

just wondering because i'm pricing out some IROKS 36x13.50 from http://www.ntwonline.com but they will not ship superswampers to canada, because national 4wd is the dealer here and national is way too expansive. I called national and they wat $452 per tire, modern is cheeper i think they want $321 per tire, but national tire and wheel is even cheeper.

The price of tires has signinicantly increased in the last few years. This may account for some of what you are seeing.

With the dollar the way it is a trip across the border maybe be the best bet.

I would imagine you would, but just produce receipts.  If you have time, get them installed in shelby, or helena.  Then there is no duty, or buy them from a retailer stateside and have them installed at said retailer, then there isnt any duty.   :o

I've bought things stateside, and brought them back, declaring the full value. I ended up paying GST on them, and nothing else.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I think sometime it depends on how "hard-assed" the customs officer wants to be.  I dont like playing games with those guys, I declare everything and produce receipts, and I have had a pretty good go with those guys, but I have heard of customs nightmares too...

I have not used at the border storage previously, but have friends that use them all the time and make monthly trips to get their stuff..best to make a quick call and see what they charge.

There is no duty on American made automotive stuff.  You will have to pay the gst at the border and that's it.  I haven't gone down in a bit but ups and Moberly's in Sweetgrass used to charge $2-3 per package.  I know the rates have changes.  Probably still worth the drive.   Just order more stuff to make it worthwhile.

there is no duty on auto parts if they are made in the US.  just have to pay GST.

make sure you print out a receipt before you go down there incase there isn't one with your merchandise (happened to me with a arb locker)  this was a problem because it meant they had to open the box and saw it was made in australia :(

I am seriously considering giving these tires a shot, no idea on price, but they make a mean M/T that is infused silicon carbide for traction on ice. like little studs that you can drive on regular roads with

I'd bet it has something to do with they way they are made http://www.greendiamondtire.com/manufacturing.html they are in a sense recycled tires.
Thus the "green" in the name

When the new plant comes on-line and they become more generally available in a wider size range, it should be interesting to see how they perform.
