xj upgrade altenator??

is there any other modifications other than the belt that have to be done to mount the alt from a 98 5.9?

Sorry don't know. Never tried to mount a ZJ alt in an XJ. The 150amp ZJ alt uses the same case as the 136amp one so if you can fit one of those on then the 150amp should fit.

I would suggest picking up a used one and trying it out. If it works then go and order the 150amp one from NAPA.

If you have problems with the alt quitting after going through mud just ask DAVE   at   AMPTECH how you can reclock the the case halves of the alt so that the vent holes are at the bottom and the brushes are at the top. This way all the crap runs out the bottom instead of collecting in the brush holders causing the brushes to hang up in the holders.

One thing that must be mentioned about the reclocking the case halves is that it only works on the older renix alternators! I think '90 and older...? I tried this on my 98 alt and its a no-go.

Thanks for that tip. A lot of people ask me if it works on all XJs but I never tried it on a HO. Just out of curiosity why doesn't it work? Do the case halves only go one way together?

Haha, no worries. I won't get my panties in a twist if you dont. 


Yes, if I remember correctly the halves only bolt together one way and that's what stopped it from working out...I sat in the garage scratching my head for a while before I realized it must be a renix-specific mod.
