TJ 4 hi top speed

Is there a limit to how fast I can go in 4 hi? I have a stock TJ 4 banger 5 speed...

i had the same jeep. i ran it often from Banff to Lake Louise in 4hi. i had no problem doing 120.
What i did do...once, that you should not do is put it in 4hi at speeds above 80. It did not gernade the t case but i did get a new sound from it that seemed unhealthy.

doubt there would be a limit?  all the same parts are moving whether "most" people are in 4wheel drive or not.

if you are in a position where you do not need 4 wheel drive, but still use it, then most likely parts will be stressed more and wear out or break faster, or in relation to speed.

if you are in a position where you do need 4 wheel drive, then you should be more worried about killing people than wearing out parts.

Where are all these people getting told "Not to exceed x speed in 4wd"? I have been asked at least 7 or 8 times in the last week and seen 3 or 4 threads on it.

I think they are confusing driving speed WHILE in 4x4 with travelling speed while ENGAGING 4x4. I don't like putting mine in 4x4 going any faster than 30-40 km/h but supposedly most t-cases are good for up to 80 km/h. Play around with it and pull slowly. If you get any noise you're going too fast....not to mention that if you're needing 4x4 you probably should be dicking around with your hand off the wheel trying to get it into 4x4 and should slow the %$^# down anyways...

I shifted my old XJ in and out at speeds above 80km/h quite often. Trick is to do it with out load on the drivetrain. Accelerate slightly and then let off and jsut as you let off shift the t-case. If you catch it before the load comes back on from deceleration it will go smoothly. Also don't yank on it or pull hard. It should go easy, if not try again or slow down.

Don't see why people keep saying its so difficult to switch from 2H to 4H, Can you change gear from 1st to 2nd without an accident? If not, you probably have bigger problems then winter driving

It's not difficult but if the traction situation is that bad that you need to swap to 4hi while going along, you probably shouldn't be diverting your attention to anything other then trying not to kill yourself/half of deerfoot.

Most people don't have to look down to shift from 1st to 2nd, but other than those in the club who do it regularly, most people have to look down to shift the t-case lever.

I believe that it does actually say in the owners manual not to shift into 4HI at speed above 80 km/h, but once engaged there should be no limit.  I agree with Clay's tip as well about accelerating and then letting off the gas, it works great.

I can't shift from 1-2 even if I look at the shifter and the clutch.

Wasn't asking about engaging.. I was asking about a maximum speed while in 4 hi, not confused at all, nice try though.
