Has anyone powdercoated Alum Rims?
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:41:36 AM »
Ok so I don't like my stock rims on my Rubi.

Mostly I don't like them because I want black ones..........no reason other than I like the look better.

So I am curious has anyone ever powder coated a factory rim?  Is it even possible/practical?  Or would they be better off being painted?

Would there be any issues or concerns in doing it?

As you can see I have far to much time on my hands thinking about these things.

I've seen it done with aftermarket rims fresh out of the box. Looked really good. You might have to get the surface glass beaded to clean off the protectants and road grim.

Is possible.  Practical... by the time they get cleaned and powder coated it may be cheaper going with a new rim..  maybe.
My neighbor was going to powder coat his and was happy with the quoted price he got.

They are going to get scratched when wheeling.  I wouldn't paint them.

Give Calgary Powder Coating a call.

When you find out, can you post how much they quote you?  Curious.

Have you thought about finishing yours on your own with a spray can? I did that to mine and am super happy with how they turned out. If you take your time and prep them correctly, you will be very happy with the results. The bonus of doing them on your own is that when you scratch them up on the trails, you can easily just give them a zap with the spray can and problem solved. If you are at the New Years Run I will be there and can show you.

I painted my own and they hold up fine even under the pressure washer at the car wash.

yeah, I hear you on the pressure washer. Mine are holding up great as well (my pressure washer at home takes paint off the factory grill, but not the rims)

ive used the paint method with great success. 2 winters now on my daily driven truck. what i did was sandblasted the factory clear coat as best i could. you could also just sand them with paper or an angle grinder. i went to canadian tire and picked up 2 cans of self etching primer, works good for aluminium wheels. 2 cans of  dupli-color wheel paint. and 2 cans of dupli-color clear coat. i didnt use the clear coat but i would just for some extra protection.
read the can for instructions. but i ended up with 2 coats primer, 2 coats paint, 2 coats clear. easy touch ups and under 60$ for all cans of primer and paint. much cheaper then powdercoating. and its an easy project. i do recommend removeing tires from rims but it can be done with tires on too.

I did the same kind of thing that hps4evr did. I used about 5-6 light coats of acid etching primer, and 5-6 light coats of rustoleum hammered black metal spray paint.
