Rusted Hitch
« on: December 25, 2010, 07:12:45 PM »
My buddy just bought a 94 chevy silverado.

And we were trying to get the ball out of the hitch reciever, we gave the truck lots of love to get the pin out of the hitch,

we hooked the ball to a tow strap and hooked that to the jeep, pulled, and pulled, and I just pulled his truck a couple feet up the ally,

Any other ideas on how to get her out of there.

Thanks guys!

Invest in a case of penetrating oil. spray it everywhere for the next week or so. Get a torch, heat the crap out of the receiver. Then proceed to beat the crap out of the hitch to get it out.

The last one that I helped with, we wound up using a 12T bottle jack with a sleeve from behind the hitch (under the vehicle) to push the hitch out. It was interesting to say the least....

It is road salt and dirt in there holding it all together , I pull mine out once a year during hunting season for my skinning rack and it needs lots of love with a BFH from all directions just to break it loose . Clean out the silt and super fine sand with a scraper and good to go for another year . Can you attach a slide hammer to yours ?

In and out to losen it up. Double check that it is not tacked or welded in.

Its not welded in, but it looks like it was rear ended or someone backed it into a wall at one point,

the pin holding the hitch in, was bent, and it took us 20 min with a center punch and a sledge to get the pin out. let alone break the hitch free,

I have heard that heating up the hitch screws with the metal, and if he tows again it may shear off from the rest of the hitch? anyone know anything about that?

Thanks guys

I've had good luck by putting tension on the hitch, such as pulling on the ball with another vehicle and then pounding on the hitch. Seems the combination of tension and hammering works well.

Haha yeah. we tried that yesterday, i pulled his truck up the ally backwards with the jeep. and we pounded it in every direction possible,

Probably alot easier to just unbolt it and buy a new one?

Penetrating oil is your friend. When my father bought a fifty year old Farmall model A, I got to know the location of every nut and bolt on that thing with a bottle of penetrating oil. Once a day, for two weeks. When the time came to work on it, a breaker bar got it all done with minimal cursing.

how surprised would you have been if the hitch shot through the back window, be carefull please!!, I could see someone getting very hurt if it suddenly gives way.

but ya, penetrating oil should work ok after long enough.

And once you finally get that drawbar out, get into the habit of not leaving it in all the time and you'll save yourself two things.
One, the frustration of getting it out the potential $250.00 fine for driving around with it in and no trailer attached.

I didn't think alberta had that fine for leaving a trailer hitch in.  Though I think some municipalities have done it (edson)  I didn't think it was province wide.  I had a recovery hook in my receiver on the back of my Duramax at all times.  Just used a crap load of grease on it so it couldn't even think of seazing in place.

That law may only be applicable to commercial vehicles, but I'm not at all sureabout that.

I do know that commercial vehicles can be fined for that.
