Boom went the radiator..
« on: January 01, 2011, 02:02:48 PM »
Well, my 2000 XJ radiator decided to pop yesterday in the driveway, and of course it is Saturday today and also New Years, so shops are closed.   Anyone recommend a shop that might be stocking XJ rads?  Preferably CSF all metal.. like to get away from the plastic on aluminum.

Nothing that is open on a Saturday long weekend.

Somethings to check though. Get a new rad cap with the radiator and make sure its the right pressure. Those plastic tanks rads can't take much pressure and if the cap is bad or the wrong psi you could blow the new rad.

Make sure the coolant didn't freeze, even ifs it not frozen in the rad it could be in the block or heater core and cause an over pressure. Even slushy is bad.

Well, I pulled the rad being as it was draining fluid out the middle.  It's nearly all made of rust, held together with a bit of corrosion, and has already been repaired by A-1 radiator according to a little tag on the top.

Glad I changed fluid in November with some nice new 70/30 Prestone, which is now all over the driveway.

I was planning on changing the rad this summer, along with a few other front of the engine bits, but looks like my schedule has been advanced to make sure I really have no money after Christmas.

If it's all aluminum (ex: tanks too) count me in.

Well, fixed this up on Monday.  New hoses, thermostat and oem style rad.  I'll have to get a better one later on as I couldn't wait to fart around.  Also installed my upgraded lighting harness, which is working well.

Next will be to re-wire the DRL system to the front signal lamps, and might get a new Daniel Stern Lighting module for that.

And maybe I'll POR-15 the roof come summer.
