tranny/torque converter question
« on: January 02, 2011, 11:44:55 AM »
i've read a bunch of stuff on the web from a chrysler service manual on a 42re tranny, but i'm just curious if someone knows for sure.

kit seems on my 93 4l Zj, i have some sort of shudder at certain rpm, and i think its torque converter related.   when the converter 'locks up' in thrid or 4th gear, there is a definite shudder.  its around 1500-1600 rpm.  when off the gas, the shudder goes away, and it won't shudder at all when the converter is not locked up.   i've ruled out driveshafts, and front end, as the front ends tight and driveshafts are good. tires should be fine too.  when off the gas the shudder goes away, so i'm pretty sure next thing to check is in the tranny.
also, tranny shifts just fine. no hesitations or anything like that;  it is kind of sluggish though;  don't know if thats because of the 31s or not though;

any ideas?

My buddy has a CAR with this trans in it and his does the same thing.  He took it into a tranny shop and they told him it needs a solinode pack.  Its what shift it.   Not sure if its the same or not but????????

Auto trannies are a little difficult to diagnose by non trained professionals over the intwerwebs  ;D

But...
My 48RE did similar shuttering just before it lost 2nd gear.
New pressure solenoid and band adjustment helped for about a day before 1st gear went real flaky. That was cheaper then a re-build but didn't really help. Band adjustment was way out of spec.
I think I had more serious internal issues, but that might help yours, if it is in otherwise decent shape.

Have you recently had one of those quicky lube places flush it?

you're telling me!

i'm at the point with the jeep where i'll just drive it till it explodes ;)  i've changed the fluid twice, so i should have most of it out;
there are no codes being thrown for the tranny, so i don't think its electrical; i think the TC just sucks and is possibly misbalanced.  i'm not gonna worry bout it, i'm pretty good at driving it now without letting it lock up at 80km/h.  i can feather the throttle enough so it doesn't kick down.  when i'm goin 100 or more (and rpm are at some 2100) there is no vibe.  weird;  gonna chalk it up to typical ZJ pewpy trannies............
