Hood Mount for Hi Lift??
« on: January 29, 2011, 04:03:45 PM »
Ok anyone out on the Hot Chocolate run may have seen the Gold Rubi (at least I think it was gold) with the Swampers on it.  He had his Hi lift on a hood mount.

Now after helping to change/reseat 3 tires that day I see a hi lift in my very near future. Especially after screwing around with that scissor lift...........useless chunks of pressed metal in my opinion.

But given the abundance of space in the 2door I don't really want to mount it on the inside anywhere if I can help it.  So my questions are in general.

Anyone know where I can get a good quality mounting kit for the hood?

What are the downfalls of mounting it there? (other than the obvious of denting the hood if I am not careful removing and putting back on)

The poison spider JK Brawler light that I have on order has light tabs on the top of the "brawler bar" I am wondering if a mounting system could be installed there instead.

I am also thinking that this mounting system should have some sort of lock that I can attach to it and the Hi Lift to prevent it from walking away.

Thoughts?

only downfall is dirty and rusty and will become a pia to work with after being subject to our wonderful weather and dusty trails.

spend the extra $100 or so and get an x jack.  much safer and easier to carry and store.

+1 on the X Jack. I love mine.

If you feel the need for a hi-lift, then get a rear bumper that has a bracket for it, or get the River Raider bracket that fits in the cargo area...but in either case, only install it when you're on the trail and likely to use it. Otherwise (like Al said) it's goign to be covered in the dirt and brine crap from the road and you're going to hate it.

As far as mounting a hi lift on your hood? That's okay aslong as you don't mind gouges and scratches on your hood and cowl. A Hi lift is a big hunk of sharp pokey metal to be lifting up over your thin and shiny sheet metal.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I do have to constantly keep on top of lubricating mine and wiping it down because they are right, in the weather it really jams it up. I keep my jack up on my roofrack because it rattled so much it was really starting to wear on me. I even hear it rattle outside the jeep... If your looking specifically for the hood mounts though Im pretty sure Warrior Products makes them. At least they do for the TJ.
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

i have a hi lift that is 13 years old and it looks brand new.
it has sat on both of my jeep floors behind the front seat. It just fits(48" hl). One jeep has been on its side 6 times (not over) and the jack has not moved.
If you have one, try it. It really just fits and i tie it off to the mid roll bar post at floor level.
Easy access, secure and remains new.

That would probably work except I often have one or two of my kis back there and I am assuming the would eat upna crap load of foot room.

Seems like the back roll bar mounts right above the tail gate might be a good option as well.

I am thinking the bulbar mount is a pretty good spot too?

I used to keep mine fastened horizontally behind the rear most roll bars with a couple of exhaust clamps and wingnuts. In out of the elements, easily accessible and didn't intrude in the passenger space at all.

I have a XJ and had it on the roof for a long lime and then on the rear. It does not seem to get as dirty on the rear. I also use one of the covers that covers the working parts. keeping it well lubricated with spray greases and  recover (don't use WD4 it is not a lubricant) it has never failed on me. Make checking it part of your pre-trip and you should not have any issue. I also got a daystar handle holder  to stop the radaling.
You can get all the hilift stuff at PA for quite a bit less.
Why does your Jeep say Toyota on it?

With kids, it would be better how Vinman had his.

Id assume it is this here http://www.hi-lift.com/accessories/tube-mount.html

That is generally the idea I was thinking but I was thinking something threaded through the bars light tabs.  Seems to me that those brackets would have a fair chance of spinning aroundmthe bar after a few days of wheeling.  At this point I am leaning towardsmthe inside back roll bar mount.

Assuming I don't go X Jack
