33's on a Rubicon??
« on: March 17, 2006, 08:43:22 AM »
A buddy of mine wants to put some 33's on his rubicon.   I'm a cherokee guy and know that it took 5" of lift for me to fit 33's, but will a 2" spacer lift allow him to fit the 33's?  His jeep only sees the trails once in a while and I doubt he'll disconnect his sway bars.

Any input's appreciated.

cheers

If all he wants to do is have 33's and he isn't offroading at all he probably could get away with no lift.  However, if he wants to offroad with the 33's then he'll need 2" spacers and a 1" body lift.

Chris aka/ Elsifer has that setup. 33's on stock ride rubi. Lots of rubbin on the trail but fine for the city. Looks like this...

now what about rims...can he get a ways with the stockers?  I have no idea what offset rubis' have on their rims...if he goes for 33x12.5's will he be rubbing like crazy?

Tell him to get 4" of lift. It can still be done cheaply.

If it's looks he wants, it look wayyyyyy better then just stuffing big tires under with no lift.

If it's functionality he wants, it will be way better on the trails. Besides, a Jeep should have to avoid potholes...

------------------

As for wheels, with a 12.50" wide tire, he should get new wheels that have 3.25-3.75" backspacing or get some wheel spacers.

If he goes to a 33x10.50 tire, he could get away with keeping the rubi wheels.

I think we'll start with the 2" spacer lift since it's already sitting in my garage and just see how things look after the tires are on, that way we don't have to worry about shocks and disco's and driveline vibes and....for now anyways

What's the stock rubi tire size?

stock rubi tire is 31 I believe. Stock rubi rim is 8" wide so his 33x10.5 will be fine. if they are 12.5 he might want to reconsider. Bacspacing between 3.5"-4" will be fine. my 33x10.5 fit fine on 8"wide rim with 3.75" BS.

will be some vibes but not much.

Well as Woolf is saying, I want to go with 33's on my Rubi, but right now can't drop alot of cash into it. So pretty much, just want to know the easiest way to fit 33's on it, without having to do any major upgrading. I do hit the trails and once in awhile will bag the crap out of it, just like anyone else.

So all in all, can i get away with just putting 2' spacers on?? Or will i have to do more modifications in order to get away with 33's?

If it helps the tires will be 315/75R16D if these are even 33's, LOL

go with a 2"spacer and 1.25" boy lift and you will have minimal rubbing with 33x10.5's

those tires are actually 34.4" by 12.3" so you have no chance with only 2" of lift.

If you don't want to hack apart your fenders and rub on evey pot hole, you should get 4" of lift for 33" tires and 6" for 35" tires.

If that's no feasible, put in your 2" budget boost and keep you stock tires on for now. Save up and do it right later.

Also, you should know that it's illegal to drive around without fender flares.

So even with those tires, i would obviously have to get new rims instead of trying to put them on the stock MOAB to even mount them properly.... And with what you have just told me the 2' puck lift, and a 2' BL would probably just be a stupid thing to do to try and make this work out for a 1 or 2 time excursion.

I Guess if all else fails, can always put what i need on credit :)

Thanks again folks!

I just put 33's on my Rubi, I have 2" spacers and I find I do rub a little on the trail, but I figure a 1" BL should do the trick for me. Hope that helps

As already stated 3-4" of lift with coil spacers and a body lift, pretty cheap.  If you go with a 285/75/16, you will not have to get new rims.  They are a 33 but only about 11" wide so you will be able to get away with the stock rims.  Also if you plan to wheel a bit you probably should get some new shocks to match the 2" lift.

The other thing you can do, if you have your heart set on running bigger tires then your lift can handle, is to simply add some "bump stop extensions".

These would basically stop your axle from traveling upwards to far, preventing the rubbing.

Lastly, if you wanted to, you should easily be able to sell your old rubi wheels/tires to be able to buy an new set of alluminum wheels with the proper back spacing.
