Things I noticed after the lift
« on: February 04, 2011, 07:57:09 AM »
Being that this is my first lifted vehicle (I don't think the heavier springs and an extra leaf in my 84 ranger count) I thought I would share a few things I have noticed over the past few days.

  • The ride is waaaay bouncier, I am sure that is due to the HD springs and more travel but I think it has to do with a change in the aerodynamics as well.......I am assuming much more air passes under the vehicle than before creating a buffeting effect - oddly enough I like it more too
  • with the bouncing I have noticed a slight decrease in steering stability, I find I am correcting for minor movements a little more often this is lessened when the kids are in the jeep presumably due to the extra 200lbs or so that helps keep things down.
  • here is an odd one..........my traction control warning light comes on when going around onramps??  Now the pavement was wet this morning and the other day when I noticed this so who knows.  Are the sensors that sensitive that they would notice that little slip that you wouldn't feel in the vehicle.......it wasn't enough for the computer to cut the power to the wheels?  I normally turn off the traction control when I am driving on anything other than dry pavement anyway so no biggy.
  • Its noisier. As in I can hear more tire and engine noise than I noticed before, I am assuming that is because more space underneath allows for more echo back and the fact that the tires are no longer in the fender wells nearly as much and therefore the noise goes elsewhere.
  • mud, slush, grime, and water throw...............Ok now this one is a wee insane especially these last few days basically my side windows from about the halfway point to the rear of the jeep (front and rear side windows) are coated in grime within a few kilometers............I thought I would have a reprieve until I put bigger tires on but apparently that is not the case given that more of the rotating area of the tire is no outside the fenders so no is more of the road stuff flung up
  • More body lean in braking and corning of course but that was to be expected.
  • I have discovered the value of grab handles - looks like I will be investing in a set for the JK here right quick..............not such a big deal for me but watch my kids climb in by hanging off the doors made me cringe

Anyway just a few of the things that struck me right out of the box..........I am sure there is more to come.  Looking forward to getting the tires for it.  And again thanks to Northridge4X4.ca for the great parts and Jay from Chanda Precision for the great install

Oh I forgot one other thing I noticed..........its Higher ::)

Sean I have love handles for ya!

Yes, it throws slush like a mofo now. Solution...wider (removeable) flat fenders...hopefully will be in production from Trailmods before too long.

If your traction control light is coming on, then check to see if your steering wheel is 100% centered...and if it is, then check the wiring coming from the ABS sensors. These also tell the computer what speed your wheels are turning at, and can cause issues if they're pinched. Also, Jay may have some insight on this and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to help - and he knows a thing or two about Jeeps  ;)

Other than that...just enjoy the lift...and just wait until you flex it out on the trail. You're going to grin from ear to ear.

I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Having to recenter the steering wheel after a lift is a must.  If it isn't, the TC will come on a lot.

I am pretty sure Jay did this.  Also I have to go back in, hopefully soon for some tires and a winch (subtle hint intended  ;) ) and we will check it then

I had the same issues with my 08 jk. After the lift every offramp would throw on my esp(?). I finally decided to just have it disabled because it was more dangerous than it did good. Braking and a little lose of steering on an off ramp isnt good.... The dealer CAN disable it, but none of them would.

I know this isnt any help to you... but just sayin.

In the owners manule there is a steering wheel dance that disables the tc, you don't have to go to the dealer for this.

It only disables it to a certain point. But not the point needed.

If I recall.... This was 3 years ago....

Straight from the manual;
Partial Off
This mode is entered by momentarily pressing the ESP
OFF switch. When in Partial Off mode, the TCS portion
of ESP has been disabled and the “ESP/TCS Indicator
Light” will be illuminated. All other stability features of
ESP function normally. This mode is intended to be used
if the vehicle is in deep snow, sand, or gravel conditions
and more wheel spin than ESP would normally allow is
required to gain traction. To turn ESP on again, momentarily
press the ESP OFF switch. This will restore the
normal “ESP On” mode of operation.

ESP Off (4H Range Only)
This mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use
when ESP stability features could inhibit vehicle maneuverability
due to trail conditions. This mode is entered by
pressing and holding the ESP OFF switch for five seconds
when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is running. In
this mode, all ESP and TCS stability features are turned
off except for the “limited slip” feature described in the
TCS section. After five seconds, a chime will sound, the
“ESP/TCS Indicator Light” will illuminate, and the “ESP
OFF message will appear in the odometer. Refer to
“Compass and Mini-Trip Computer — If Equipped” in
Section 4 of this manual. To turn ESP on again, momentarily
press the ESP OFF switch. This will restore the
normal “ESP On” mode of operation.
NOTE:
• The ESP system will change to “Partial Off” mode if
the vehicle speed exceeds 40 mph (64 km/h). After the
vehicle speed is reduced below 35 mph (56 km/h), the
ESP system will return to “Full Off” mode.
• The “ESP OFF” message will display and the audible
chime will sound when the shift lever is placed in the
PARK position from any position other than PARK,
and then moved out of the PARK position. This will
occur even if the message was previously cleared.

I would think the off-ramp issue would be the ERM, Electronic Roll Mitigation, kicking in. With a Higher center of gravity, I imagine it would activate sooner... This is just from my experiences over the summer, seeing of the ERM was actually a noticeable thing. Only come on when accelerating on an offramp

If you find yourself correcting for minor movements while going straight or the return to center a little slower, there is a chance that with the lift your positive caster in front has decreased slightly. Not a big deal for an alignment shop to adjust.  putting a load (your family) in back of vehicle would increase rear weight therfore increasing positive caster for a little better feel.

No its not that.

Merely correction on bounce.  She tracks straight and true on even road with no wind but I will keep an I on it as things settle in.

Thank you for this.

I did the steering wheel dance on the side of Crowfoot last night after coming off the ramp from Sarcee trail

Freakin computer started to apply heavy outside front break when I was coming on to the ramp under power, almost tossed me for a little spin.

Stopped on the side and did the dance right then.  Damn computers, I don't need it making bad decisions for me I am more than capable of doing that myself.   8)
