Rear Main Seal
« on: April 08, 2011, 04:12:08 PM »
So I am pretty sure that my rear main seal finally decided to kick the bucket.  My question is, I still want to drive it but everyone time I stop / park is the seal going to spew oil?  I know that I need to make sure the oil level is kept up and my schedule just does not allow me to take it down to Jay right now, but the weather is so nice outside

Please let me know

Park on a steep hill pointing down hill.   It won't leak then.  But you will have to watch the oil fairly close.  As well you might get oil on the clutch and then it will be no good. But people do drive the trucks/cars with leaking main seal all the time  Just watch the oil level.

use thicker oil, will help slow the leak. 10w30 would be fine at this time of year. park downhill. usually it doesnt get onto the clutch, just flows down the back of the oil pan. but theres always a chance

You beat me to it, no one has a rear main seal that leaks worse than mine, ya ya it's on my to do list.  Leaks bad with 5w30, barely leaks with 10w30.  With 5w30 I have to add half a liter of oil every month, with the 10w30 I'm good for 3-5 months or whenever I get around to changing the oil.  I do get a bit more lifter noise but whatever, if I didn't listen for it I wouldn't hear it.
I just can’t resist a good mud hole!  🤦
