Hey All
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:03:41 PM »
I just thought I would introduce myself.  I just bought a new Jeep, and I'm looking forward to coming out to some club events and having a good time!

I've actually met some of you before; my brother and I came for a 2010 ride through McLean's creek in his bright blue Toyota FJ.  I was the passenger.

Since I have more sense than him, I decided to get a Jeep.

On Friday I am taking delivery of my new 2011 Unlimited Rubicon!  I can't wait.  I will hopefully be joining you guys for the 101 course (signing up shortly).

I am putting together my basic off-road kit as we speak.  Any tips on what to include?  I mean stuff like tow-straps, etc.

LOL!!! Welcome aboard :)

A high-quality snatch strap!  (ARB for example) I used to use an Erickson strap from Princess Auto until someone pulled me out with an ARB strap - what a difference!!!!  No bone-jarring, tooth-rattling lurch, just a nice, 'gentle' (but powerful) extraction!!  They cost more, but they are seriously worth it!!  I wish I'd have spent more for one right off the bat instead of 'making do.'

Welcome!  You'll have a lot of fun on the 101 course, I know I learned a lot and had a great time last year!

June 12 - unofficial CJA General Meeting @ Peter's Drive-in

I think the Event Calendar is incorrect (mixed up with the event above it, the NA4WDA run), as Dom said it's usually the 3rd Wednesday of the month, so should be on the 15th of June.

p.s. tow straps and recovery straps (or as Slewfoot said, snatch straps) are very different.  There's a lot of literature on the forums already, I'll leave it at that.

A few things you'll want to make sure you have with you:
 - Tire pressure gauge (to drop tire pressure at the trail head)
 - Good Boots...I use hiking boots, however some guys bring out rubber boots when things get muddy.
 - Water  / Food / Snacks
 - Jacket / sweater, mountain weather can change drastically

Basic Equipment you may want to get:
 - CB radio
 - Fire extinguisher
 - First aid kit

I'm guessing a lot of that is already listed in the 101 equipment list.  There's tons of good info in other threads on the forums too, so search around a bit!  ;)

I was on that run. The FJ did pretty good but good on ya for taking a step further than your brother. :D

Shawn here can give you tips when it comes to wheeling it in reverse!

Welcome aboard :)
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

Thanks for the welcome all!

I will have to miss it this month, I have a company BBQ in Edmonton the 15th, and I doubt I'll be in any state to drive back that evening =)

Thanks for the advice Slewfoot, I'll try to pick pick something up in advance of the 101 course!

BlackAura: Good thoughts.  I'll have a tire pressure gauge for sure.  The water is a good call too.. I remember how long the day was last time =)

Well I didn't buy it to look good in a parking lot!

I was on that run. The FJ did pretty good but good on ya for taking a step further than your brother. :D

Thanks Shearcon.  I think the Rubi will do even better !

TL-Iguana: Wheeling in reverse?  I was hoping that more of a 201 topic...  :P

So you like the bubba rope eh?  That's actually what I was going to order.  The online reviews are good, but I was weary because it's pretty different from all the other snatch straps out there.
