The trails were nasty.  There were several washouts, major mud fields.  We did not get out of there until 7:00 PM and we started at 10 AM.  There was winching and pulling to get most of us through some of the sections.  We spent a lot of time picking lines through difficult sections and I am not sure if I would have tried a lot of the crossings without knowledge there was not someone able to haul me out.

Unless you are lifted, I would not go without lockers. Lockers save us stockers, big time.

With all that said, I had a great time.

Lockers smockers, learn to wheel properly and use the skinny peddle effectively and you don't need them unless your crawling around on some huge pile of rocks.

You sound just like the guys who say a winch is a waste of money. Trust me If your really having fun you need this equipment, winch. lockers.... all of it

I also agree with this statement. However I was on this run and even though lockers were not a necessity I saw how someone may want to use them. I've been out with everyone from beginners to guys with decades of experience and it seemed to me everyone on this run fit somewhere in the middle. It was a good run.

So after reading this statement I gave it some thought.

And in the end I have to say that I think that your statement is poorly thought out.  Now maybe you don't need lockers, maybe you do.  But your statement implies...........at least to me that because I use my lockers that I don't know how to wheel properly.  I am unsure how you can make that definitive statement against everyone that wheels with lockers.  Seems to me that it is about as logical as saying you don't need four wheel drive to go wheeling, by your logic 4wd isn't needed just someone who can wheel properly and use the skinny pedal effectively.

Lockers like any other equipment (bigger tires, stronger axles, lower gearing....etc etc) when used in conjunction with good technique can allow you to tackle terrain with less risk of mishap or damage.  Now I have no problem if your statement was something along the lines of ...............You should never drive beyond the means of your experience or equipment (or better yet the combination of both), but to just outright state that having a piece of equipment that allows for a different approach to obstacles is only needed if you don't know how to do something properly.........well I think that is a single minded opinion that does little to provide any insight.

I have seen plenty of situations were lockers were of great value and it was more than just crawling around a huge pile of rocks.  I have seen plenty of situations were more skinny pedal just means more damage.   I 100% agree with the experience part, and there are many spots that I have come across where I am pretty sure my equipment could have done the job I don't quite have the confidence in my experience to tackle it..........so I go around.

For climbing, descending, mud, snow, rocks, water, ledges whatever.......................give me my lockers................if that makes me a poor wheeler then so be it, I can live with that.

I was out a couple weekends ago with a group I've never been with. They think lockers and winches etc are a waste of money and time. Me and the wife have both... of the 6 vehicles out that weekend ours were only two that didn't require any fixing. A busted windshield, broken shackles, bent bumpers and 2 water logged engines were some of their issues. Yup... my lockers and winches were a waste for sure.

Sure they might have helped through some situations, but those things you mentioned were from poor drivelines... and hydrolocking from going through water to high or hitting it too fast...

Holy smokes people! there is nothing to debate here

Following your logic, why would you even lift a jeep if it diminishes the challenge? People want capability, they want to be able to make it through harder obstacles. If you have ever been out wheelin in Alberta and haven't come across an obstacle you can't do because you don't have lockers I take your total lack of experience as proof you have no idea what you are talking about. You can sure wheel without them, more power to you! But there is good reason why they come from the factory on a Rubicon and why people pay good money to have them installed

Lockers enable you to do easier terrain more consistently as well as flat out more difficult terrain, assuming the person behind the is intelligent. They add much value to the overall experience. Anybody who flat out recommends against them is wrong!

Seriously? you want to start talking about the value of a winch on a difficult trail?.......... look into the issue before even responding, for those who do anything beyond stock trails, money is well spent on a winch.

No, I haven't wheeled in Alberta yet. I'm upgrading my rig so I will be able to. In BC, I have been in trails where it's rock and roots. If you have lockers, you can make it up, if you have a winch, you can pull yourself up, but just having LS, you won't be going anywhere. I don't care who you are. And yes, I have seen those who drive through some pretty sick stuff  not be able to get a jeep with no lockers up the hill. Experience wasn't the issue. Hardware was.

Simple. The one got hydrolocked trying to cross a stream... didn't make it so decided to rock back forth till it dug a big enough hole to sink past the airbox. Bumper came from them not wanting to use a winch cause they are useless. Was a tight spot and the recovery nailed a rock pretty damn hard once the stuck broke loose. Windshield came from coming back out of a real greasy trail. They all had to lay on the gas and pretty well hope for the best coming back up it. Lots of carnage in a span of 20 minutes including shackles, the windshield from hitting a low branch and another vehicle slipping into muskeg deep enough to again bury the airbox. My useless lockers and the wifes got us back up no problem. Popped the clutch and idled up it. All of which preventable by using the useless gear and a little less gas. Dont judge me by my post count I've been doin this for 18 years and got lots to learn... I've just learned I enjoy wheeling far more then wrenching. If I don't make it home... I did something stupid. I'll keep the winches and lockers. Had enough fun before without em ;)

Ya maybe after I get my rig finished up. Got a bit of work to do on it still. Okay... a lot of work. But I got some awesome guys helping me out.

binare - that makes a lot more sense. I'm not judging your post count. I have seen others with super high post counts and wouldn't listen to a thing they said. :)
Was just more curious how they hydrolocked up and all the other stuff. Makes sense now. I could go on to ask why you didn't winch the guys out of the creek, but it's their own driving that got them stuck in that mess. Needless to say, sounds like a expensive day for the guys without the lockers and winch.
