piaa 520 smr lights

Bought a set of these off a junker at the auto wreckers. They work but only was able to get the lights from the truck with about 6" of wire attached.

Can anyone tell me do I need the relay and the switch from PIAA or can I buy other stuff at like princess auto or something

PA stuff should be just fine.  Make sure use appropriate fuses though .  Nice score too buddy!!!

Found the wiring harness with all hook ups for 80 at truckcessories

Is it better to buy that or just put my own together at princess auto

I've wired in several sets of lights on a few cars/trucks now.. Its easy to make your own and not worth 80 bucks for wire a switch 2 inline fuses and a relay

You can use the existing switch to trigger the new relay, then run decent gauge cable to the power and ground from your batt to the relay, and to the lights. Just use the existing switch to trigger the relay if you dont want to run into electrical problems and melted wires from the higher current draw

You can cut off your stock fog lights, and then use that wire to trigger the new relay as it is connected to your switch. ASSUMING it is a standard Bosch style relay, this should be pin 85. You will still need to run the new harness from the battery to the 12v post on the relay (Pin 30), and the same gauge wire to ground (Pin 86). Your new harness will also have probably one wire that daisychains into each light for 12v, and that needs to go to pin 87 on the new relay. If there is a central Pin on your relay (87a) it is unused. The lights will likely have small ground pigtails that connect to the chassis for ground.

I have a complete wiring harness from a set of kc lights switch relay fuseholders fuses wire ect you can have for 20 bucks if you want save you gathering all the parts

 No I have the whole harness with relay I was wondering if I could just cut off the stock fog light wires and splice them to the new PIAA lights and not have to wire in the harness if I have to tie in the harness I will just do it with the diagram that came with the lights. Just wanted to know if the relay was really needed if I just switch the lights or will the draw be to much for the factory switch and more over the fuse to handle?

If the wire gauge that came with the kit is larger than your stock wiring, id use it. If it is the same gauge or less then it may be fine, but it is your rig and not mine

I would use the wiring it came with to avoid drawing too much current through unknown relays, switches and wire.. Thats just me

Basically, Amps = watts ÷ volts . If you know what rating that relay you have in there stock is, as well as the gauge of wire your stock lights use, and they are both within the rating for your amp draw off the PIAAs you should be fine. The PIAA lamps probably draw more amps than your stock ones, therefore they need a larger gauge harness to run safely. Drawing too much amperage through a gauge of wire that is too small will create heat, and could possibly short out, and of course the worst case scenario is a fire could occur.. You will also get reduced performance from the bulbs as they will not output to their full potential.

Yeah it's a toss up I guess got the same response on jeep.com forum said if the guage wire is smaller on the new stuff in theory it should be no prob but up to me lol and we all know how much fun frying stuff in a stock harness is. Guess I better just use the new harness with the new lights to be safe there is no fuses in thie new harness though and relay is a sealed unit.

 Got the intell off the jeepforum.com electric tech said the PIAAs draw to much for the stock set up, it would eventually melt just swapping lights, he said to use the PIAA harness and relay, if I want to eleminate the switch just wire it to mine as Iguana said. Thanks guys.

 Tore the dash out to use the stock switch and low and behold, bad switch lol. So they are on and wired with the harness and switch that came with them.
