4.0l swap please help!
« on: July 30, 2011, 02:52:26 PM »
So long story short, have 1997 jeep tj 4.0l that rolled.  Body and frame totalled.  Bought a late model 1996 (still coil spring) with a blown 2.5l.  Removed both engines/drive train.  Went to put 4.0l in today only to realize the engine mount brackets on the frame are roughly 4.5" different than the 4.0l frame.  Looked on advance adapters for a mount kit, theres nothing available for 4.0l only chev/hemi etc . Please tell me I don't have to cut the mounts off and reweld as that does not sound appealing.  Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.  If you have anything to sell that would make this engine go in, please call me @ 403-680-7913.  My name is Kris.  Thankyou

From what I have heard a 350 is an easier swap than a 4L. Other than that... sorry I can't help you out.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

Ive heard that too.  I have a 4 bolt chevy 350 thats done up and ready to go, but I will not put it in until i have at least dana 44's under it. 450 hp will break anything and everything.  Just want this damn 4.0l in it so I can go rippin for the remainder of the summer.

I'm pretty sure you have to cut the mounts off and get 4.0l mounts. I don't know for sure, but I believe the mounts are different.

Jp magazine did a whole writeup on the swap. Check it on their website. Yes you do need to grind off the old mounts, locate and weld on new 4l mounts.
Getting grumpier every day.

You have to cut and move them or find a 4.0 frame for your swap, Dave at affordable has one or two 4.0 TJ frames

YJ
both YJs and TJS were sold in 96'.  there was no 96 model year.

just like any vehicle today, they have old stock still kicking around, and the new stock coming in around this time for 2012 kind of deal.

so the jeep, IF it has coil springs and round headlights, would still be a 97.  donno why someone called it a 96.

I run into this all the time. The next years models come out in fall and were built in the year before. So you can have a door plate saying that a vehicle was made in 1996, and was bought and registered in 1996 but is actually a 1997 model and when ordering parts its a 1997.

This isn't complicated guys. He said its got coils, its a TJ. Obviously if he is swapping the frame into a TJ then its a TJ. If it was a YJ frame he would have run into a lot more problems by now. Quit busting his beans because he called it a 1996.  Sheesh!

96 was the first stamped year of TJ's. Obviously most hit the showroom in 97 but technically, there were 96 build dates available.
My titled 97 Ram has a build date of Oct 96 as an example.

cut the mounts off. clean them up and re weld them. we have an 87yj that had a 2.5l that we blew. picked up a 94 cherokee with 4.0l. did the swap. just cut the old mounts off, basically placed the motor in where it was suppose to go, marked out where the mounts hit the frame, took it back out, then started welding. easy as pie.  8)

Hahaha I loved the comment about busting my beans! I only mentioned late model 96 in case there was some stupid reason something was different.  I understand its technically a 97.  I cut the mounts off with some help from Andrew, and re-used the 2.5l mounts. We also gusseted the crap out of the mounts, so I won't have to worry about breakage.   I figured I'd keep the 4.0l frame in tact in case I need it.  The motor is in, looks like its where it should be.  Guess I'll find out when my clutch shows up and the trans goes in.   :D I'm thinking of using the rolled tj to put my 350 in, might as well make it a nasty bogger!
