Homemade snorkel help

Thinking about making a homemade snorkel and just had a few questions. First off should i go plastic or aluminum, I've read up on tree branches braking plastic ARB and PVC pipes on the trails. Also what else under my hood should i make 100% water proof before i go swimming, any other tips would be appreciated! :o

Extend your differential, transmission, and transfer case breather lines high enough so that they won't allow water in. Some folks like to extend them right into the factory airbox.

I made my snorkel out of Aluminum ducting for an intercooler.
It is a bit more spendy but should be more durable

I happen to have some aluminum ducting and some silicone fittings that may work. If you want pics let me know and Ill catalog and price out what I have!

I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

When i bought my jeep it came wit a cold air intake, so i dont know if i need to get a factory airbox or if i need to make one around the filter. Then run the lines into that box?
And for the aluminum duct how would you connect the pieces welding or just the silicone?

You will need the factory airbox if you're going to do the homemade snorkel setup. No welding is really required to mate the aluminum ducting as you can use rubber elbows and hose clamps. There are MANY detailed how-to's and write-ups with pictures online for homemade snorkels for you to gleen some information . Do a search online and you will be amazed.

My freind suggested electirical coduit, any opinions on that as a material. Also could i run the stock box off of the cold air  just before the filter?

Electrical conduit will rust.  PVC is stronger then abs and it does not expand and contract as much.  There is a stainless steel venting product called z flex that works pretty good, it comes in 1/2" increments from about 2" to 6" (ish).  It is pricy too (probably $75-200) depending on length and elbows etc.  It has built in gaskets and hose clamps to keep it tight.

I bought mine with a home made setup already installed. He made it out of exhaust tubing and painted it black with bedliner

2"-21/2" Ridged Electrical PVC. tons of fittings, easy to work with, and can bend corners and stuff when you heat it up. thats what i used you can get pretty creative. and it looks cleaner i think then some stovepipe setups ive seen.

Im an electrician so if anyone wants help bending  pvc or emt i got the tools and the know how. I canget  it far cheaper then home depot as well.

you can bend PVC???  I'm so confused.  can you make like 90s with it???  would there be a way to make a makeshift intake tube under the hood.  my snorkel makes this annoying whistle at certain rpm's.  i would love to make a cheap intake for everyday driving then switch to the snorkel for wheeling.

90s are tough but ya I run alot of pvc... bending it requires patience and finesse and a little practice.. any commercial industrial electrician should be able to bend it up. what size you lookin at? When you wanna do it?
