304 AMC help!
« on: October 01, 2011, 08:54:45 AM »
Was working with a little bit of a rough idle, back fired Once a while then started blown blue and white smoke. It was originally carburated but the guy I bought it off changed it to fuel injection.  It wasn't holding a charge so we switched the battery, started working with smoke out then back when reved up. Ended up dying again so we switched the alternator had it turn over once Amd now it just clicks. It just bought this rig and I can tell it was poorly maintained due to the fact lots of wiring is half arse and one of the spark plugs was less then finger tight. Any ideas guys, I'm
Swamped And can only think head gasket for smoke and voltage regulator for the start.

maybe over heated it. i just looked at a newer liberty that did a similar thing. although it is much different it still shares a similar problem. the engine was overheated to the point where the heads warped so bad that it wouldnt run on its own. it does sound like you have more then one problem though. if the ignition clicks then start with a fresh battery. should get the engine running long enough to look for the other problem. it kinda sounds like the fuel injection needs some tuning as well. not much of an answer but its a good place to start. electronic fuel injection systems lose their memory when the batteyr is removed or goes dead for a long time. so it could be trying to re-learn or if its a tune-it-yourself system it may need you to tell it what to do. which fuel injection system is it?

Got it running, thanks jef! Timing is out and the fuel injection needs to get looked at and tuned. Looking into what system it actually is,  research  time.
