D44A
« on: October 18, 2011, 04:52:06 AM »
Moved this over because we were derailing heep-a-lop's perfectly good thread where he's looking for a D44. Sorry!

thinking of swappin a 3.0 crd into a zj and imagine the d35 would tell all that torque to go f itself

See Johnny? THIS is how you build a ZJ! A real axle, and a diesel.  ;)

I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Dont let me down Johnny, Ive got money on this bet!
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

Calling a D44A a Dana 44 is like calling a Patriot a real Jeep. It may be "true" but it sure ain't gonna work like the real thing.

That's interesting. Does an iron D44 have magical powers????

With a truss it strengthens the weakpoint of the axle. The pinion and ring gear are super beefy. Spartan locker will be good on 33s.

Goood try tho. Stupid rubi owners

Johnny, be sure to protect the bottom side of the punkin as those aluminum housings are REALLY easy to punch holes in ;)  I too considered a d44A but soon realized(after son research) that unless I intend to be stupid and go bigger than 33s someday the d35 housing is actually stronger the the d44A 8)

Do some more reading ;)

The 44a trussed cancels out the weak points of the axle. Same as trussin a 35. The weak points are the axle tubes in both axles; that's what causes 35s to break shafts and 44as to spit out carrier bearings.   Both axles have weak tubes. The only difference after both axles are trussed is the turdy five still has small R/P. The 44a is beefier.    Cmon guys u know I've read every thread about it on the web......   Plus, when I'm ready to do the swap, I am gonna do a little D35 stress test for you ;)

No, but the "iron" one doesn't need a truss. Maybe the "magic" is in the truss that the aluminum one requires to be as strong as the "iron" 44.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.
Here's your cup of STFU... ENJOY!

So you're willing to lose ground clearance to strap on a half-assed partial-width truss, while still keeping the weaker (and vulnerable to rocks) diff housing? And still put up with the fact that the D44A isn't actually compatible with a lot of the D44 parts and mods out from the majority of the aftermarket?

If the tubes are actually the weak point (and not the join between the housing and the tube) the how does a truss that only extends a few inches past the edge of the housing adress that?

i'm bored of this.  tell you what, let me do it, i'll beat on it, then report back when it breaks..............  if it breaks.........

note; i don't want/need 'aftermarket support'  all i need is a drop in locker and a truss.  i dont' need 100 locker options, gear options etc.

At least get your web wheeling straight. The tubes on 35s and 44s are identical. It's housings flexing that causes the issues and that's what trussing addresses.

S for the argument I think Kevin says it best  "never get involved with someone that has no budget. More often then not they will nickle and dime themselves into failure and try to take you with them. "

Bah!  Just giver Johnny.  It's no rockwell, but half the fun of wheeling is actually getting out there.  If you spend 2 years building and fitting axles to your rig, how often do you get to see trails?  Pack it in there and go break it somewhere.  At least your out wheelin.  I'm on jeep #6 now and am still waiting to get bits and pieces on the jeep so I can go out, it's fun wrenching, but remember why you do it.
