broken chevy starter
« on: November 12, 2011, 06:59:45 PM »
in my 58 fc170 i am running a 700r4.

well today i went to move it. started and stalled. tried to start again and the starter just spun.

removed the mini starter and the shaft was in 2 peices. I cant get the peice that turns the ring gear out. does it have to come out from the traany side of the starter mount? and other ideas

it is not jammed on the gear as i can turn the motor by hand

tommorow morn ill go get a new starter and try and move it into the garge with a towbar.

then i guess i pull the tranny. any other ideas?

It should all come out from the starter side.

TH350 and 700R4 should be just about the same... The starter should just come out like any other... Perhaps take a pic and post it so we can see what you mean? The flywheel should be just that... a flywheel, with nothing attached to it from either side. The starter should have the small gear inside the housing of the starter, and that comes out as a unit with the solenoid attached...  ???
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...
