Oil claws its way to $71 record

I just had a run of 9 days bicycling to work - about 11 minutes all on river valley trails with no traffic.  Dealing with traffic on streets cuts it to about 5 minutes.  The drive is 2 or 3 minutes max.  I had to end the run and drive Friday because of payday banking, etc.  I've still got 3/4 tank of 88.4 gas in my TJ from 3 price hikes back.  As long as the sun shines, I peddle.  I realize as a single guy with no family / children in a smaller centre my options don't apply to everyone.  In my case though, I just won't pay 1.08.9 to drive 2 minutes alone in perfect weather.  That's gas better put to use in the high country all summer.

Where's the Liberty's CRD for the TJ?  Am I the only one who asked when I bought mine new in December?
I'd rather be dragging a club than clubbing in drag

No Kidding!!!

I don't understand the north american aversion to diesel. Over half of the automobiles in europe are diesel. Its cheaper, better fuel economy, and in some instances, more power.

I don't get it. I would love my warpig to be a black smoke belching trail monster. A small 4 banger diesel with a two-stage turbo would be killer for torque and mileage. Might have to trade the Rubi in for an old diesel land cruiser

Or maybe just a TDI or something european for a daily driver.

Exactly!  The Land Rover Defender line not available here comes with a standard diesel that achieves 32 mpg (Imperial) on the hwy.  I know the Jeep faithful don't want to hear this but had it been sold here in December when I was buying...  would have been a tough one and the vastly superior towing capacity probably would have sealed the deal.  I think Ford/Land Rover is missing the boat not offering this line in North America.

Friends of mine own a loaded VW Jetta TDI.  I've driven it and it's virtually indistinguishable from the two gasoline Jettas my sister and her husband own.  There is nearly no outward or inward sign whatsoever  it's a diesel.  They drive from Red Neck Deer to their place in Radium/Fairmont, golf daily in the summer or ski daily in the winter, poke around Invemere shops, go for dinner all week, etc., then drive home to Red Neck Deer without ever refueling on the trip.  VW says you'll refuel ONCE between here and Toronto.

I'm curious if any participants here have a CRD Liberty.  I've seen only ONE ever in traffic.
