Some issues
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:20:52 PM »
So I was changing the passenger side axle U joint today and when I pulled the shaft it was completely wrapped in wet mud about a centimeter thick right to the splines. The splines were dirty as well. I recently changed the diff oil because it was muddy, everything looked fine. Anything I should be looking forward to doing? I'm just worried about mud being able to enter the axle housing. Is a  seal gone?

Another issue ,whenever it is below freezing my starter takes about 15-30 tries to crank. You can hear the solenoid on the starter click just no cranking. After the initial start up it will work every time. Battery is brand new.

i had this problem as well . the outer seal on the little jeep diffs suck .. so mud and water gets in all the time but doesnt reach the center section often unless your inner seal is shot

but to check the inner seal ull have to pull both shafts and remove the carrier and see if its in bad shape ..
what you can do is remove the diff cover and since your shaft is out you can use something long and thin like a hanger with a rag on it and and push it through from the center section down the tube and out the end . do this a bunch of times and clean out all the mud thats inside the tube
then putt everythign back together .  and stop putting you jeep in mud     jeeps dont like mud

second . your started mine did this all the time specialy when it was cold
its because its full of mud and water stuff that can freeze   so most lieky will need to change your starter out and again stop putting your jeep in mud

JEEPS DONT LIKE MUD

thats why CHEVY truck were invented  so we can sink those in mud

My starter did that as well this week.  Hit on it while you are cranking it with a hammer. Jarred all the frozen crap free and works good now. Starts every time now.   Err maybe good till it frezzes again. Yea and stay out of the deep mud.

ove time it will .. fine fine sand like that will find its way into everything and slowly grind away are bearings and seals and slowly haunt you with stupid repairs

but so will driving a big tire truck on the road all the time

I'd have to agree that there is no winning, Mud is pretty much part of wheelin here. No matter what you do it is going to wear on the jeep eventually.

However, as I sit here, with my brake pads worn out in under 20k kms, my throw out bearing once again whirring due for failure, A diff filled with mud, a moody starter and another wheel bearing on the verge of falling apart. Maybe.....just maybe I'll take it easy on the mud from now on....

Seal up every little seam on your new starter with silicone. I learned this trick when I owned an old chevy truck that had a small oil leak which was getting into the starter and detonating, before sealing up the starter I had replaced it 3 times in 3 months. Every starter I put in any vehicle now goes through the same silicone sealing process. I have the same starter in my jeep now for 4yrs and it has seen a lot of mud and water without any problems.
