Hello   has any of you put a 1996 318v8 into 1997 TJ    it comes with a auto trans     also will it bolt to my 5sp  Thanks

almost sold my tranny to a guy with this setup.  the motor fit in nicely. he had it running through teh stock computer. just had some work done to the harness. worked with all his guages and stuff too.  it was really clean.  he was using a Dodge ram truck standard tranny (nv3500 or soemthing)  it worked well.   the Ax15 will not bolt up, but i do believe they make an adaptor plate for it, OR i think (don't quote me) the 5.2 dakotas used the AX15, so you'd need that specific bellhousing.


you know i have a V8 and a 44re tranny kicking around...... out of a 96 actually..........

Will not bolt to your 5spd. If you want a V8 there are whole kits out there to put in Chev, Fords and Dodge Hemis. The Chrysler Magnum V8s isn't very popular with the aftermarket support and really isn't that great in terms of HP and fuel economy. A Chev/Ford option would be cheaper. A stroked 4.0 would be easier and kick a stock 5.2Ls(318).

If you are going to do the swap at least do a 5.9L(360).

The 5 speed 318 in that TJ was awesome john. It looked almost stock and still fit with the clutch fan! buddy said it was a cheap easy swap wiring aside. And worked very well. Keep it Mopar IMO.  ;)

Meh.  If your going to throw a V8 in you might as well throw in something with power.  I say a 6.0 Chevy.  At least your over 300hp.  5.2 aint much better than the 4.0l.  I had one in my Dakota it didn't impress me at all.  Just alot of problems with it.  My buddy has over 400kms on his 6.0 in his 2500 and it runs perfect.

drive a dakota with a 3.9............ lol

point is, the 5.2 was almost bolt in. we saw it. and heard it. guy spliced the stock harness and used everything mopar.  how much work is a 6l chev swap?
guess it depends.... the guy wtih the 5.2 did his swap in a weekend............. on his daily driver.

if you have nothing but time and another ride, give'r...... i'd probably agree with clay though and if you can, go 5.9.

ask any person whose driven a ZJ if they can tell the difference between a V8 and the 4L

I think he meant 400 thousand :p

I have a 6.0L sitting in my garage waiting, and have heard of these engines going 600,000+ without issue.

The whole ls series of engine is crazy. I got a friend in wetaskiwin with a 2011 z71 5.3 wit a lynsholm twin screw since 20000km. I had a 6 l lq4 I was gonna put in my grand prix cam change an 950 holley and 500 hp wit a broad curve. I love the ls next motor for the xj will be a after its built and I blow up the 355 for it

Gets between 25 and 27 mpg on the highway. All stock gauges work and drives perfect. Have over 20,000km on it since swap. But hey, if you want to buy expensive adapters and have a big PITA doing wiring and gauges, go ahead and put in a Chevy motor. Oh yeah....my 5.2 will  smoke the tires for a block.

Running the Chevy and Jeep computer in tandem = all guages work and you retain the stock Chev motor harness. Using the NV4500 which bolts right to the motor, and it's got a 27 spline output so it bolts to my t-case. Are you just bitter you didn't go for the extra 800cc?

i hate to say it but that chev will make that jeep move damn fast u can get 500hp out of a ls without to much trouble....

i love ls that is all...

on a side note i think u could drop a 3.0l crd into it and smoke both of them with minor mods

Bitter? After I sold the original 2.5 and ax5 I'm up $300 from where I started....drove it to Oregon Dunes and Bonneville this summer.....never had a problem. Could I have done an LS swap with more power? Sure. Could I have done it this easy and had it work this well for this price? Not likely. Besides, if I'd wanted to go for more power and was willing to spend more, I woulda put in a Hemi....

By the way....I'm swapping over to an auto.....so if you want an NV3500 that fits with stock driveshafts....it's going to be for sale....
