Moab

Anyone ever do any wheel'n in Moab. How long did it take to
drive there? Can you just sign up in a group like we do here
at McLean? Do you just get a map and go out by yourself, or
hire a quide? I know you can rent a Jeep there, buy I want to
drive my own. Thanks

I've been down a few times, first trip I just hung out at a trail head and luckily a group came along and welcomed me to join them.
Second trip I ended up cruising the campgrounds until I found a group going out and invited myself along

I strongly suggest finding at least one other vehicle to make the trip with you, it really does suck having to be worried about breaking and no assurance of help.

Oh yeah, it's 1816 Km from Cranston, I always made an overnight stop around Pocotello cause I'm too old to drive the 20 hours at once.

Oh yeah, you HAVE to stop at the big Army surplus in Idaho Falls, it'll take up a couple of hours of your time but it's worth it.

I'm planning a trip next Labour Day, it's the local clubs annual wheeling weekend and usually gathers a good selection of rigs.
If you go down on a regular weekend, you'd be surprised at how few rigs you see on the trails.

Vince is right. 20 hour drive. Most of the scenery sucks.  When you get there, the scenery is amazing, and the wheeling is even better. It's also best to go with at least one other vehicle - someone you know, that is equipped for "bad things" happening when you're out in the desert, and will help you out if you break.

If you go to the "City Market" grocery store in the center of Moab for some time between 8 and 9 AM, you'll find that there will probably be some people gathering there, getting ready to head out. If you're nice about it, they'll probably let you tag along. The danger with this is that you don't know who you're wheeling with, or where they're going. Hint....if you see a bunch of guys with F-350's hauling tube buggies, that may not be the group that you want to "tag along" with.

I've been twice. The Four Wheel Stampeders try to get down there every 2-3 years. We've made some local contacts(well the Colorado 4x4 club is sort of local to Moab) .

As said its pretty easy too hook up with strangers, just look for rigs your size. If camping google the Canyonlands campground. It is right in town so you can walk to lots of stuff/restaurants and many 4x4ers stay there so you can meet people right in the campground to hook up with.

The scenery is awesome and there are TONS of easy scenic trails that you can do on your own. Many of the "difficult" obstacles also are optional and have go arounds.

Anyone remember the name of the trail guide book with the gps cordinates in it? Moab trail guide or something like that(mine is still packed from the move). Very worthwhile book to get. Can be ordered through Chapters, or they may have it in stock....


We usually try to go around late spring or early fall as it gets VERY hot down there. Left here just before May long in a bad snow storm, got stuck in snow in Wyoming(Jeep was on trailer behind dually, got stuck in wife's uncle's driveway), and three days later my daughter got heat stroke from the 42C weather in Moab.
