welded dana 35

Anyone out there weld the dana 35 in there jeep, am thinking about doing it to mine, just curious to see if anyone has had any success with it?

a buddy of mine did his and he said the only problem with it was the jeep being used as a dd. Rear end would get kinda squirly in the corners at high speed. lol
let me know if you do yours as i will be looking for someone to do a gm 12 bolt diff soon.

Ya i figured the cornering would get a bit shaky, I am probably gunna weld mine unless someone gives me a really good reason not to but i can for sure let u know how it turns out and i might even b able to help ya out with weldin yours

are u doing this under a TJ or the ZJ

i would see to much of an issue besides maybe busting a shaft here or there   asphalt and grippy tires will put allot more stress on those shafts when turning .

but as for being annoying in the corners just easier to drift that's all

ya its under a zj with 33x12.5 tires, i cant c much of a problem either other then probably some busted axle shafts and some drifted corners, u guys think i should weld it to the carrier as well or just the spider gears??

weld the spiders together.  you can lay a bead on the side gears to the carrier but its not the important weld. if you put a bunch of weld in between the side gear and spiders, it CANT spin

you will likely break shafts in teh turdy 5. meh.

on the road make sure to keep your rear tire pressures the same. it will effect it.  other than that it'll be fine. it'll suck in a daily but its definitely doable

ya if i gob enough weld between the spider gears it should hold it, and its not a daily driver i only drive it on the road to go wheeling and in the summer it will probably get trailered every trip  out, thanks for the info guys i will post up how it all turns out

i was on the same page as you.

i am now goin with th 8.8 and stuff. but i was gonna go with an aussie or something in the D35.  if you weld it, you should look into some chromo shafts too.  they are reasonably priced, and that might help keep the life of shafts.
c clip eliminators and a truss would be great too lol

Eugene had a welded 35 in his ZJ. Worked fine until he actually tried to climb a ledge one day. Snapped an axle on the first attempt.

Its your junk, do as you please. I wouldnt run it.

I remembered... We changed his axle on a hill on back of Top of the World.

Just be ready and carry a few spares

During my 3 short years wheeling I have been on the trail during 3 D35 breakages, all open diff all on 33" tires, none of them were really abused much  either.

thats the problem you have to beat the living crap out of them .. ask XJ hero .. his took a beating with 36's under it

Nathan ran an Aussie locker and not a spool, carried spare axle-shafts, and was fast at replacing them. He also had a small bottle of Holy Water to be on the safe side. I think Charlie(Crunch) broke his c-clips twice in one year in his locked 35  and is currently looking for a TJ Dana 44 as a replacement.

Spool = dirt cheap traction but I'd be iffy in running one in a Dana 35

thanks for the input guys but i decided to go with a ford 8.8 swap instead, i figured the 35 wouldent last long being welded so this way i avoid alot of hassle and head ache
